Ok....I want to try something new.....
I want to try a few new things: 1) build a flyrod with single foot running guides 2) reduce amount of different size guides. I am building a 8wt 5 piece for saltwater and would like to know your thoughts.....I have recently built this blank with snake guides.... I was going to use three stripers 20 16 12 then for runners go 10 and run the rest with 7's.....I would see going 20 16 12 then running to 7 just worries me that it too big of a jump..... Could this be done with three guide sizes...... What would you suggest? Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 07/26/2007 11:50PM by Jeffrey Wolfanger. Re: Trying something new; and using few different sizes

16, 12, then all 7's. Re: Trying something new; and using few different sizes

The guides are spaced several inches apart, therefore, even moving from a 20 to a 6 isn't a big jump at all. The line will never notice it.
I think Jim gave you a good size and number set up above. .............. Re: Trying something new; and using few different sizes

I just finished a 9', 4 pc., 8 wt., using the guide sizes Jim suggested above. It performs great! I'm a believer in using fewer different sizes. Re: Trying something new; and using few different sizes

Date: July 27, 2007 09:32AM I'm working on a Dan Craft FT 6wt(that I"m going to use a 7wt line on) right now myself, and wanted to try reducing the number of different size guides. After searching through some posts here, I decided to go with a High frame 16, then a 10, and single foot 6's for running guides. I was a bit skeptical as I was taping them on last night, as those 6's looked pretty small. I went out and did some test casting though, and it looked really good. I even had a braided loop on the end of my 7wt line, and it went through just fine. I was concerned about that first number 6 guide jamming things up when I was shooting line, but it didn't. The second stripper straightened the line out just fine, and everything seemed to flow nicely. Good luck with the rod. You'll love the ceramic running guides. I'm just finishing up a 10 1/2' 7wt for steelhead and went with 16,12,10 and 6's the rest of the way.
I went with the tripple stripper setup due to the extra length of the rod and it worked out well. For your 8wt I have to agree with Jim's recomendation. Regards Dave Fishing is Life the rest is just Details Re: Trying something new; and using few different sizes

I was browsing back through Rodmaker's last night, this was covered in the issue with the threadless guide wraps in the Beginner's corner.....It add some more detail, worth a read if anyone else is interested. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
