Happy Memorial Day everyone,
Has anyone out there had any experience with making a short (4'6") 1 piece ul into a 2pc?? The customer wants it for a pack rod for TINY streams. I am thinking it should not be too involved but I need some help for this one. I have a SCII and an shII that I can try this on. Yes, I am aware that both are VERY different from one another other than overall length. The scII is much more powerful as compared to the shII. I have let the customer play with each and he likes the both equally for the tasks he has in mind. He is going to be chassing small Sierra Nevada trout with them. This one is going to be interesting since the smallest reel seat I can mount will be an 18 since this gentleman has hands the size of small skillets!! proud to serve! Maybe try a Batson F764-5 fly blank and throw away the bottom two sections OR an F662-4 and throw away the bottom section. Granted, you will void the warranty by building it out of class, but your time is more costly than the blank will be ... so it really doesn't matter. Both of those would make a great UL for his intentions, they would also be very light yet strong.
Another choice is the St Croix 2S60LF4, again discarding the bottom section. If you really want to "cut and paste" the blanks you have ... read Ralph O'Quinn's repair piece in the library. You could actually craft an "external" ferrule system that would function. I would recommend, however, that you look into using one of those fly blanks. Re: making 2 pc ul

I have an old FenGlass FS-53 UL that I used on the tribs of the Truckee and the Rubicon. It's a pretty special way of fishing, usually by yourself except for the gold prospectors in the summer sometimes. Re: making 2 pc ul

Tom,
You can do this. Read the repair article in the library. Essentially, you are making a repair with a sleeve, just handy that it will become a ferrule for you. You'll need a piece of fiberglass scrap that fits the two pieces. Make sure you taper the sleeve on the tip section to avoid any sharp transitions that could break. Also be sure the butt section doesn't bottom out when the pieces are joined. Give it some room to wear in. I did this to a bass blank I used for a fly in trip and caught a bunch of big northerns on it. No problem. Terry Re: making 2 pc ul
