Ray, the reel will fit either size. The size of the reel seat should be determined by how it feels in your hand. Persons with larger hands typically perfer larger reel seats.

Ray besides filling comfortable in your hand, make sure there is no side movement of the reel foot

I haven't used the 250 in wquite some time, I don't think it fits well in teh size 16 seat, but I could be wrong. Your best bet is to spend $20 bucks on your first order and order a size 16, 17, 18, and 20 seat and see which one you like the best.

It fits just right on a sz 16 seat but if you have a large hand a sz 17 may be better to your liking. An 18 or 20 is overkill.

I fish a 251 all the time for salmon/steelhead, all casting reelseats will fit the reel. I use an textured exposed blank Batson trigger reelseat, the size of the reelseat depends on your blank diameter. If it's over 15mm than the 17mm reelseats will get you in 1/2 mm increments to 17 mm. After that you have to use a standard trigger reelseat for 18mm and up. The reelseats length goes up with the increase in size due to the possibility of you using a larger saltwater reel which have a larger/longer reel foot. I shorten the reelseat threaded area to a length that just barely allows the reel to be installed if I'm installing a foregrip, I just spin the reelseat nut till it hits the foregrip, install the reel and tighten. Speeds things up a little bit I think when you don't have excess length installing or removing reels.
