8wt Atlantic salmon blank - RX8 3 piece vs. 4?

On my last Atlantic salmon trip this year, a guide stepped on and crushed my beloved (and discontinued) 8'9" St Croix Legend Ultra 8wt.

I've been thinking of trying out an RX-8 blank as a replacement. Any difference in performance between the 4 piece and the 3 piece? I generally prefer 3 piece blanks and rods, so would go with that if all other things are equal.

I would try the SCV, but have read several reports about a soft finish. I don't exactly abuse my rods, but they do get banged around a bit, so am wary of the SCV.

Did you contact St Croix to see if they still had the particular section available that was damaged? Did you throw the guide overboard?

Troy,
Yes, all other things being equal, there will be some difference in performance. The three piece will have a little better performance due to the added weight of the additional ferrule and the additional area of slightly increased stiffness due to the additional ferrule in the four piece.

How do people feel about the RX-8 (3 or 4 piece) in general? I see it gets a lot of praise in the lighter weights.
