I was looking through a sponsor's catalog and noticed the CalStar IGFA blanks. When looking at the action of the blanks it said IGFA. Exactly what is an IGFA action?
Thanks, Steve Re: IGFA rated blanks

Hi Steve. IGFA is not really and action. It is more like a rating and goes back to the old days when line classes were rated by thread count. Most IGFA rated blanks I have seen and dealt with are parabolic in nature and designed to be used with aluminum butts. Hope that helps
I guess I should have said that in old time terms most of the IGFA rods were parabolic or more accurately to say the pretty much bend even from tip to butt. I guess todays terms it is a slow type taper. I seem to be stuck in the old time terms. Forgive me for using neanderthalese. Edited 1 time(s). Thanks Doc! I think Tom needs to put "parabolic" in the glossary section.;) Re: IGFA rated blanks

I could, but then I'd have to give the more usual rod building definition of the term, which isn't really the true definition of the word. Not even close, really.

The IGFA really has more to do with a standard than a description of blank action. It equallizes the blank with all others used to enter fish for World Record Fish with IGFA rods and line weight classes. You can have a fish entered for recording purposes when all facets of the standard are in use. Re: IGFA rated blanks

I know what IGFA stands for. I don't really know anything about parabolic. But that wasn't the topic anyway. I was just asking why is IGFA listed in the action column when looking at Calstar IGFA blanks. Re: IGFA rated blanks

You pick a line test to go fishing with and a blank designed to make the best use of that line class as a fish fighting tool. One of my all time favorite rods is from a 12 lb, 7 1/2 ft graphite G Loomis that is no longer made. Re: IGFA rated blanks

IGFA is only a moniker given to a long rod with parabolic action. A fishing rod that bears the IGFA name is by no means required to record a catch to the IGFA record book.
