I want to build a combination rod with a detachable 6"-8" butt extension. The extended butt will be used for crappie fishing so strength is really not the main issue. I just want to extend the length of the butt for leverage. My intention is to use one of Batson's 2" fighting butt kits, glue a piece of 6"-8" rod over it and then use a cork grip. Any other ideas? I'm working on something that will appear in the volume 9 #5 issue of RodMaker. Still a bit early to say for sure how it's going to work.
What you propose can certainly work on lighter rods. Only thing is that you do not want to overtax that junction at the seat and fighting butt. On light rod built for the purpose you mention, you'll most likely be just fine. .............. Re: Combo Rod Butt Extension

Hi Owen,
I used the fighting butt hardware to do exactly what you what. The link below shows what I did on a 3wt. 4pc. spin/fly combo rod. [www.rodbuilding.org] Hope this helps and good luck. Raymond Adams Eventually, all things merge, and a river runs through it.. Re: Combo Rod Butt Extension

Thanks Raymond,
Nice rod. Thanks for the pics. Did you "beef" up the longer extension by adding a piece of rod blank? Re: Combo Rod Butt Extension

Yes Owen,
Cork by itself is not strong enough. The first exstention I made I faled to use a spare piece of blank and the cork broke on the first test cast! Man did I feel stupid!! Raymond Adams Eventually, all things merge, and a river runs through it.. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
