How long and frequently do you turn Permagloss?

I used it years ago but can't remember now. I know I can re-coat every two hours or so, but how many minutes between turns and how long before it kicks?

Trondak U-40's PermaGloss (PG), made by Ralph O'Quinn, [u-40.com] should be applied to butt wrap or line guide thread so THINLY and so QUICKLY that turning the rod after application to "level it out" or keep it from "sagging" should be unnecessary. PG works best when applied in thin coats that will not / cannot run. PG dries so fast, as far as "skinning" or reaching "tackiness", that by the time you finish the next guide, it may be too late to go back and re-touch a previous guide. A few minutes is all it takes to "set".

Trying to apply PG in thicker coats is counter-productive, because the xylene solvent must evaporate before the next coat is applied. If your technique traps bubbles, chances are, you are applying it too thickly. Turn it in a horizontal dryer if you want, but even vertical hanging to dry in an out-of harms way corner can produce similar & fine results.

PermaGloss is a pre-catalyzed, moisture-curing polyurethane finish in a xylene-based solvent. The room humidity (and to a lesser extent, temperature) affects the rate of curing. The higher the humidity, the faster the rate of curing, and the shorter the PG's pot life. Additional coats can usually be applied every 2 hours. To achieve any sense of depth to the PG finish may require 5 coats or more. But PG is a very hard and durable finish that it hard to beat if you want a hard, non-yellowing thread (or rod blank) finish for a very low amount of additional weight. ... -Cliff Hall+++, Gainesville, FL-USA
