I want to build a fly rod that mostly will be used in fresh water but some days a year in saltwater as well. I fish an old Sage 6100 with a Struble Mod. G reel seat with a cocobolo insert sometimes in saltwater and had never any problems.
So I think the combination of wood and (black) aluminium is o.k. for use in saltwater. What is with nickel silver? What is more saltwater resistent - aluminium or nickel silver reel seat hardwares? Stefan Re: reel seat hardware - aluminium versus nickel silver

Aluminium is what you want for salt water. Nickle silver will just get eaten up. Make sure your insert is impregnated wood. Most guy's who go to salt water just use an all aluminuim seat. I love nickle silver and beautiful wood but I only fish the fresh water. Hope this helps. Re: reel seat hardware - aluminium versus nickel silver

Dear Stefan,
Tom is right, nicle silver will not stand the saltwater in the mid or long term, also Aluminium may change the look after longer exposure to saltwater. RGDS, Ole N.B.: ... und ich dachte schon ich wäre der einzige Deutsche hier in diesem Forum. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
