What is it called and how is it done when you see the forgrip taper into the blank. It looks like it is a high build up of finish that slowly tapers to the blank.

I taper the forgrip using the cork. Glue onto the blank. then coat from the blank onto the cork where the thread will go with several coats of permagloss or finish. When hard and with light tension wrap the thread from the blank onto the cork as far as you want to go.

I use the same method as Bill but I use a material such as "Marine Tex" to make a smooth transition from the cork to the blank. I then finish and wrap from the blank up the cork.

I do a lot of those and here is how I do it. I put the rod on my dryer and slightly raise the tip end. with the rod turning, i put gobs of 5 minute epoxy where the blank meets the foregrip. As the rod slowly turns, the epxy will flow smoothly creating a nice smooth ramp. You have to keep adding epoxy until you have enough to make the ramp that you want. The height of the tip end will pretty much determine the slope of the ramp. When it is dry, I just wrap up the ramp until I get to the foregrip and tape the thread end to the foregrip and apply finish, When dry, just trim off the excess thread end with a razor (you can also just add a drop of super glue to the end of the wrap).

Try it on a piece of scrap with a cork ring on it. I think that you will like it! Pigment can also be added to the epoxy

Are you talking about a ferrule in front of the foregrip? I believe Sage used to put them on their SP series rods but don't know if they're still doing it on other rods.

If your hand is steady enough you can turn any grip on the rod blank and taper the foregrip tight to the rod blank or you can "cheat" and use a rubber or vinyl hosel which conforms to the blank and is tapere as opposed to a winding check which is blunter/stubbier. Although I do like Mikes' method above --- cause it allows me to play with epoxy and drive Putter crazy with questions on marbleing
