There is a maximum but it's not fixed in stone. After taping the guides on and test casting, you may have to tweak this guide.

Ralph O'Quinn, in his writings recommended a 15 inch minimum but no maximum.

Some of my surf guides are pretty far down the blank. The rule is, if there is one, is to have the transition completed prior to the flex point. I complete it prior to the lockup on the heavier rods. C2

I tend to max out about 12. Don't really like going any farther then that.

After reading these posts, I went out and measured three rods; a 5'6", a 6 footer and a 7 footer. All had the first guide over 15 inches. I measured from the front of the reel. When setting up a rod, I use this little homemade job that holds the fly line at the middle of the reel seat and measure from there.

I just wondered if we're measuring from the same point. C2

I'm talking of the distance between two guides. There is usually a ballpark distance from the reel to the first or butt guide.
I think some placed a piece of tape on the blank to see if the line hit it to tell if there would be line slap

I think that we're on the same page now. I measured the distance between the butt guide and second guides and it is, indeed, shorte than 15 inches, but I wouldn't be concerned unless I got blank rub or line slap.

I have used the tape method when checking for line slap. I put a piece of tape on the blank and coated the line with carpenter's chalk. Sometimes, line slap was so bad that it looked like I was trying to write my name or something. I learned a lot from these tests. C2

Carpenters chalk, did not think of that. Too lazy to look for the post.
