I thinking about getting a grizzly hobby lathe to turn cork handles. Is it possible to turn wood reel seats with this setup also?
Thanks, Tony Re: grizzly lathe question

Hi Tony,
The Grizzly will do a nice job for cork or EVA foam but not wood. There a alot of people using the Grizzly and they all seem very happy. Hank On The Rocks Fishing Wells, ME. Re: grizzly lathe question

Why not spend a few dollars more and get the new Wilton mini lathe? I have been seeing a lot of these being used by exhibitors at woodworking shows. It ships from Amazon for under a C note (see: [www.amazon.com]). Re: grizzly lathe question

Seems like you could turn reelseat inserts on a steel mandrel with this setup. You will have to get or make a mandrel, then drill the block of wood for the insert, then put the insert on the mandrel and turn it round and to shape. That ought to work fine.
But I prefer using a regular lathe and a 3 jaw chuck. If you can afford buy a mini or midi lathe up front you will end up with a much better rig that is easier to work with. Even if you stick with the mandrel turning as above. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
