I have been purchasing denatured alcohol for my alcohol torch at a dental supply store. I have been told not to use denatured alcohol out of the hardware store because it contains Methenol which makes it more combustible. What is another safe sub for what I am buying now. Anyone ever use Isopropyl alcohol (90%)???? I have heard it is ok to use. Any advise here? Thanks in advance.

I get my a;chol from a hardware store, and have for years. All denatured alchol as far as I know is just grain alchol with a small amount of wood alchol in it so you won't drink it. The stuff I've bought and the stuff we used in the Coast Guard didn't appear particularly flammable to me, no more than any of the other solvents, safer than some I can think of. That is what we use here and I have used for many years. Haven't had any problems yet.

I picked up some Isopropyl alcohol (99%) and it seems to work fine. Thanks for all of the input folks.

I have been using Denatured alcohol from the hardware store. I remember trying Isopropyl once and I couldn't even get it to ignite. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
