Is it OK to use metallic or holographic metallic thread to wrap guides with? I was told that it isnt strong enough to wrap guides with and should only be used as trim or decorative wrap. Any info or opinions would be appreciated.

Gudebrod HT A is plenty strong to wrap guides with, I use it as a second wrap on most saltwater rods I wrap, put a light coat of rod finish on prior to the third wrap. I coat each layer of thread for the strongest wrap.

I wrapped a light action surf rod (10' 6", for 2 oz lures) this spring entirely with Sulky Metallic. It is holding up fine to repeated 100-plus yard casts, not caught much with it yet, but am not worried.

Don't use the "holographic thread" for guide feet. It isn't a thread at all but a thin, flat mylar film that will likely not hold up. Sulky, Rice, Robison-Anton, Gudebrod metallics will all work just fine.

The Gudebrod hologram (electra) threads are nylon threads with the holographic coating. They're available in royal blue, green, red, gold and silver. These work fine for guide wraps. Don't know about any others; I haven't seen any of them.
I've used both size D and A in these; I think the royal blue is my favorite of the bunch, but I'm a nut for blue anyhow!!

I have used Gudebrod metallic to wrap guides for about 20 years now and haven't lost a guide yet. I think it will hold. Don't have any experience with the holographic stuff.

Yes! The HT metallic is great for huides use it all the time. The stuff that Ken was referring to is the thin flat mylar film (it's not a thread) sold as "Sliver" or "Shjimmer". Sulkey also has some really neat stuff in the mylar also. It's nice for butt wraps, trims on end of guides, etc.
