I was wondering what peoples preferences are for mounting guides in relation to the spine on a fly rod. Is there a difference between a salt water and fresh water fly rod? Re: Spine Mounting on a fly rod

Putting the guides opposite the effective spine gives what many feel is the best overall qualities of casting and fish fighting ability. Another good placement is to put the guides so that the fish is pulling against the stiffest axis (this won't necessarily be 180 degrees opposite the spine) and provides the most lifting power. ..........
