I built and finished a rod with my name in the signature area. What is the best way to cover that up so I can sign a new name to it? I want to give it to my niece's husband. Thanks

Simple question... I don't like the clunkiness and inaccuracy of the std grease pencils most folks seem to use. I have read that some use welders pencils and others use refillable fine line carpenters pencils. I have used paint pens but find them a bit hard to clean up afterwards. I like things marked with fine lines or tic marks that are accurate. Can some of you explain what you use to mar

I know this has been somewhat addressed a few years ago but am bringing it up again. I don't do this very ofter but a high schooler broke a high end rod I built him. I am salvaging the top to make a 40" Walleye ice rod for outside a house (a run-N-gun rod). Since the rod had micro guides on it I had to sand it smooth taking the paint off. I plan to paint it then clear it. What do I use for

Hi All, New, but not new. Just started more rod building so I'm sure I will have many questions. First question, I'm building a rod for a friend of mine's son, 22 years old, that I was building for my friend. Sadly, he passed. So I'm going to give it to his son. I wanted to write some thing on the blank but have been unsuccessful with paint pens. Too translucent.... not fine enough etc. Any di

We all pretty much know that there is a shift in color from thread on the spool, to thread on the rod when you put finish on, without using CP or NCP thread. Personally, I like the looks of regular nylon thread with just finish on it, versus with CP, and finish on it. I just think it has a different luster. Myself and others have said how we plan on that color shift and translucency that stra

Put on a decal and realized its a bit off angle. It’s bothering me and thinking about cutting the section off and re-wrapping it. Better to do this after the epoxy fully sets?

Looking for suggestions. I'm building a rod for someone who would like the blank to be flat black. This is for a planner setup in Florida. Likely looking to use a 50-100 or 80-130 blank. I usually build on Batson rods, but don't believe they have something that meets this request. Thanks in advanced!

Ok, I am just going to go for it. I have an 8-1/2’ blank that should be about a 6wt. I have reel seats, I have piles of cork, I have guides. What do I need to not do wrong first? Fitting the reel seat, should I use masking tape, cork, foam? What works, what’s necessary, and what do the cool kids use?

What is the best way to go when stripping old graphite rod to the bare blank? Removing the paint and all.

Hey everyone. Just got some rod building gear and figured i would rebuild an old rod before i go full bore with a new blank etc. Ive stripped all the old guides off and ready for the next steps. Figured I would document the process and obviously use all of you for some help along the way and maybe at the end it can help another newbie like me. Now that the guides are off I'm going to scrape o

How would I go about using permagloss for rod finishing? The blanks are already painted and some old rods could use some refinishing. Do I clean them and apply directly, or is pre sanding with fine grit sandpaper required? Does the rod needs to turning for application and/or drying? How many rods will a 1 ounce bottle coat?

One of my rods have some coating or clear coat that is separating from the paint in some places. What is the best way to remove the coating without hurting the paint underneath? Scraping?

I know there are tons of discussions on this board about how to use decals and an epoxy coating for the labels on our custom built rods. However, I have not been able to get a smooth, clean epoxy layer no matter how hard I try. Factory-built rods silkscreen (I think) the labels using a durable paint with no epoxy overcoat. Has anyone tried to do this on your builds? Is there equipment out there t

Hello from the Denver area. I'm brand new to this hobby and I have a gazillion questions. My back ground is in automotive, mostly painting. I have run body shops for a while now as working on the shop floor is not practical as I get older and more beat up. I already have 2 expensive and time consuming hobbies in hot rods and fishing. However, I saw a custom hand built rod at a fund raiser an

If I were to use the two above links as a rear grip and a foregrip on a build with a Fuji standard reel seat, would the seat sit nice between the two with no visible gaps? I wasn’t sure how grips without tenons would do with those standard reel seats.

I just finished making a 'new' rod out of a a St. Croix Mojo Bass factory rod that was broken off about an inch above the handle. The part I could salvage was 5'10" long; the power is medium heavy. My Steps: a.) Decided on a Spinning Rod over a Casting Rod (and to use only components I had on hand). b.) Removed factory guides and extra epoxy with a razor blade. Carefully. c.) Scraped

Have couple rods with broken guides. 10 feet 3 oz weight 2 pieces spinning. Just hate to throw things so decided to fix them . Striped the first one with abrasive pad, paint and primer both. What paint and primer to use ,brands and models? Clear finish? Read some topics on forums and internet, feel more confused now? Will appreciate any info. Thanks in advance.

Hello there, I'm doing some experiments on re-painting a stripped blank. My aim is to rebuild its original aspect, I mean a clear finish with semi-transparent dye to keep graphite spirals visible with a caramel-like color. It seems I've found the right finish (acrylic paint in 2k flavour, to be spayed with an airbrush). The problem now is the dye... usual epoxy pigments/inks are not strong

I have a 1960’s Montague 8’ fiberglass rod, and I need to replace the cork handle. This pole breaks down just above the reel. The handle below the reel is wood. Just above the ferrule where the pole separates is cork, and that cork is so old, it is breaking up. How can I change out this cork? It looks like I need to remove the ferrule. How would I do that? Heat to melt the glue? Where would I fin

I think I’ve just learned a tough lesson im afraid. I just stripped the label section off this rod im building. (If you care why check out my last post) Stripped it off just fine but had a small amount of paint residue on the blank that I used acetone to wipe off. Came clean wonderfully but I wasn’t even thinking about my Fuji winding check sitting right there. Acetone came into contact with it

I’ve been a high build epoxy user since I started building rods and like it fairly well. For the most part, I can get a nice flat finish with it with the occasional lump that you can mainly feel when running your fingers down the finished area. These areas are always on long sections like label sections on the butt. I always attributed these lumps from just using too much epoxy. Anyways, I fig

So I got to thinking about ways to add short sections of color to a blank. I’ve seen marbling and thread wraps used but I was wondering if anyone has used an appropriately cut sheet of colored vinyl to accent a section of rod with color? Any other techniques you have seen used?

I stripped an old Fenwick 6'-6" rod. I checked the spline. I was surprised to find the spline was off by almost 90° . Back in 1998 this was an expensive rod. I thought Fenwick was a good rod. I can't believe Fenwick skipped setting the spline.
