Hi All. I am looking for a source for foam cores for fly rod grips, to be covered in a carbon fiber mesh. I need them for a 1/4" mandrel. I have made a couple of these grips and really like them. One of them finished in an automotive urethane, and the other finished in an automotive 'soft touch' clear. This is for my own personal building, not for commercial use.

Pretty much decided on doing two foam core grips with colored fiberglass sleeves and have a few questions. Does color of the foam core matter when colored fiberglass sleeves are used? More specifically, do the colored sleeves have any transparency? What epoxies have people used? Searching on the net I see many 2:1 ratio epoxies advertised for carborn fiber wetting, some much cheaper than o

See accompanying photos under, “Grips, Handles and Reel Seats”, “CARL Ferrules”. A number of months ago, I mentioned developing a composite (FG)ferrule system and was disappointed with the lack of interest, if not simply, “Why?”, so I just let it go. After re-mentioning the concept on Doug Moore’s post, “Ferrules” a few days ago, a few showed interest, so I have prepared a build procedure for th

Hi All, In my previous post I mentioned I was building a white rear grip for spinning rod. I am using a E-Glass Sleeve over foam core. I am going to tint the epoxy white to get a white grip. Question If you tint the expoxy white will it prevent it from yellowing? Has anyone done this? Experience? If you use Perma Gloss as a final coat does this prevent the epoxy under from yellowing?

Wanted to see what the typical markup is from some of the builders here. I've got a few people wanting rods built and want to give them a fair quote. Just a basic build with no decorative wraps. Thanks all.

So I want to put a graphite handle on the rod I'm working on and this is the handle im looking at (Woven Graphite Handle Tube Kit MHTHT-K-2 [0.980] from mud hole. It come with one graphite arbor that doesn't look nearly as long as the handle my question is am I supposed to cut that in half or how does a guy go about putting one of these things together? This is my first time dealing with one of t

Hey Fellas, Does anyone have any experience reaming carbon fiber tubing from Matagi? I'm using it purely for aesthetic purposes on a split grip and I want it to slide over the rod blank. I don't want to use it as a handle extension at this time. The OD on the blank is about 13.57 mm while the ID of the carbon tubing is 13.00 mm so I would only have to ream about 0.5 mm. This would save me 1mm

I have a spare rear grip which would be useful to me if I can shorten it a bit. If I cut it, 1. What's the best tool to use for a clean cut, and 2. Once cut how do you clean up the cut end such that it doesn't appear cut?

Has anyone that have used these carbon fiber grip ever had any trouble with the mesh over the grip coming off. If you look at the pick below you can see how the fiber cloth is just heat shrunk over the grip.

Top-coating some CFX carbon fiber grips with either Lumiseal or Permagloss, is there any need to sand these down any further before applying? Many Thanks!

My grandson and I are attempting our first go at making a birch bark handle and don't know which type of adhesive to use. I have about 1 quart of outdoor wood glue on hand but if 2 part/slow cure epoxy is the way to go I will buy more as I only have 5 minute epoxy on hand. Any advise is truly appreciated!

I would like to know on a casting rod, what is the lightest handle configuration, I'm mainly interested in the following handles. 1. Split Grips in Cork, EVA, Carbon Fiber, & Winn grips or combinations of these. 2. Full Handles in Cork, EVA, Carbon Fiber, & Winn Grips. If you know what each of these weigh that would be awesome, trying to make a decision and weighing all the optio

So I've made my grips for my centerpin with a mixture of burl cork rings, rubberized cork ring and stabalized wood. Now I've put these together on a quarter inch mandrel and need to Reem them out. Anyone have any suggestions on how to bore out these grips? Will a regular cork reamer work or do I need to do something different because of the stabalized wood? Any suggestions will be helpful. Thanks

I am having difficulty contacting Riley Rods after placing an order. I submitted an order for some material to make grips on Feb 27. From what I can tell everything was processed. I check on the order and it says "Complete" but I have not received anything from them. I have tried contacting them using the phone number listed on their web site and e-mail, also through facebook messenger.

Can an acrylic grip be reamed to fit the blank, or do you have to drill and install a arbor. I having been doing the later but my heart thinking would be that a grip reamed to fit would be more sensitive. Thoughts?

I like the feel of cork grips, but today I can buy an excellent fly-rod blank for the price of a decent cork grip. Putty-smeared cork grips are not an acceptable choice. The putty turns to powder and the shoulders of the exposed holes in the cork quickly crumble. What alternative to cork is the best grip choice for a person who intends to frequently fish with a fly rod?

I'm looking to build my first graphite handle for a spinning rod. I'm not looking to not break the bank on this project, but am drawn to the increased sensitivity and light weight of these grips. That said, anyone have any experience building them and have any insight on the do's / dont's and best parts to use? I've looked at the Tenessee style tubes as maybe a first attempt, and they look pr

Semi pro bought me a St. Croix Legend Extreme LXC711HMF today and asked me to change out the handle. Normally not an issue, this rod has a composite handle approximately 11" long that is shaped all the way down like a split grip. It has an hour glass shape so to speak. I cannot see the blank in this run but I can tell that this taper, in the center, takes down to nearly the exact size of

I am planning on turning my first grip and have a few questions. The first deals with the design concept. How do you come up with the design pattern you intend to use. Since this is my first time turning a grip I do not have cork, burl, or burnt rings on hand to put next to each other and see if I like it. Is there an easy way to visualize the look of the finished grip before hand? Next questions

Normally use foam core on the carbon fiber grips I make. Was looking at the cork and eva foam grips I had and got to thinking, why couldn't I just put carbon fiber over them It would save a lot of time. Anybody ever try putting carbon fiber over cork or regular foam grips?

Hey guys so I want to try out the Fuji TVS grips on a new spinning rod. I am not sure though what size seat I should buy or what handles I should look into. I am likely getting it from Mudhole. So I want the reel seat to sit flush with the edges of the rear grip. It will be a split grip rod, and I would like the rear grip itself to be very short as I most often hold the rod by the reel seat. I al

Hello Builders, My name is Trevor and I am looking to build my first rod this winter. It is going to be for personal use and will be my first, hopefully quality, rod. A friend of mine has gotten me into bass fishing over the last year and I have a casting rod that gets me by, however I am using my trout rod when finesse fishing and would like to step it up to something a little more substantia

In looking for the different colors of EVA available I stumbled across hobbylobby. They carry sheets of eva material in different thicknesses. Is there any particular difference in density of eva material that one should be aware of? Anything special to say Mudholes EVA sheets compared to something you'd get from amazon or the like. Just trying to expand the color options.
