As the subject states.... Can anyone sell me on using these? Ive never built a rod with them.. Ive gone to a store and held a rod with them, i personally prefer cork... If anything, it seems other mediums allow for a significant advantage on customizability.. It seems with winn grips, it is what it is.. And im not a fan of hkw they litter thier logo all over the place.. Can you shape winn? What m

I need a foam core for a grip which will be covered in a CF tubular weave. Needs to be 1.5" o.d. i.d. not as important, but will be over .5" when finished. Needs to be 10" - 12" long. Any sources? Anyone here want to sell one to me? Lightweight but strong for the foam. Cheers!

I've been reading a lot of searched questions and it really doesn't seem very popular to pour your own foam cores these days or everyone just knows how to do it but me. It seems relatively easy but what I'm looking for is mold ideas. How hard is it to make a silicone mold? What type of mold release agents are you using? What type of material for the mandrals (aluminum or steel) I am going to at

I am gearing up to try my hand at carbon fiber grips. I have RM Volume 10 Issue 6 which stoked me further. I've watched Capt Mikes and of course Tom's video's and found them very helpful and searched this forum for info. - in the video I watched, Mike seals the foam core prior to sleeving and that makes total sense to me but what is he using to seal it? Is it the same epoxy that he wets the sl

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!!! After reading the article on Birch Bark Handles in the latest issue of RodMaker, I am very intrigued with the concept and would like to give one a go myself. The problem is that I do not know what to look for and where to obtain quality birch bark suitable for a rod handle. Have any of you fabricated such a handle and/or can suggest a supplier? My calculations suggest a

Newbie here again. I have built maybe 10 or 15 fly rods and have been thinking of getting a power wrapper. How many of you guys use one? How long does it take to get the hang of? Was looking at the Alps Forecast model to be specific. Thanks again.

Hello all. I recently discovered this forum and the wealth of knowledge that is available here. I am specifically interested in finding more information on building the foam core grips with carbon fiber sleeves and it appears this is the place to look. I have read some recent discussions on the topic and they often reference past issues of Rod Maker magazine. I am hoping that there is someone

Tom (Kirkman), I've got (what I think) is all of the back issues of RodMaker Magazine related to building carbon sleeved expanding urethane foam grips. But I've got a question I can't seem to find the answer to. What grade of Carbon Sleeve is best suited to grip making? I'm inclined to go for the 12k (heavy) Carbon Sleeves from Soller Composites. A little experienced recommendation would be appre

I've tried a lot of different reel seat and fore grip combos in rods and still haven't quite found the perfect setup for me. Specifically, I place my entire hand in front of the spinning reel. Would like whatever seat/fore grip gives the best sensitivity and it light weight. Currently the best setup I've found is to use one of the contoured American tackle aero seats BACKWARDS, or up locking

Herb, your mention of carbon fiber grips (Anthony Unger's post below) creating a shear point is the 1st I've ever read of this. I don't doubt your word, but did you learn this from personal experience or is there some place I can read more on the subject? I've only used a cf grip one time so far and it was from a supplier, but none of the suppliers that I'm aware of mention this. Perhaps they sho

Hey guys, new to this site.. I am at the thread coat stage of my 2nd build.. This is a 2 piece, 7' extra fast action, medium power.. 6-12 lb... I put a microwave guide system on it.. Never tried them before, hopefully they work as well as i hope.. Cfx carbon fiber split grip, looks beautiful on the slate grey blank.. I feel pretty good about these, the tan fighting butt is from one of my first pours of foam, then I decided to try black rit dye and I think it worked great! I'm going to slim down the fly grip a little then try my hand at the carbon fiber. I'm thinking of trying a dry layup, wet with resin without heat shrink. I know that would work with fiberglass but I haven't used CF before, am I asking for t

My 3rd rod build and i used a MHX blended 8 foot rod with cork grips and graphite reel seat. The handle resonates or transmits sounds that i have never heard any other rod do, it will amplify the little bit of noise of the reel or if you bump it. Instead of using the foam core for the reel seat i used the ole masking type way, did i do something wrong or is this the nature of the rod being that s

First post/first build start to finish. I have replaced guides/fixed other stuff on rods before, just never started with a fresh blank..... I've been reading a lot on the forum & hoping I include all the relevant info below to answer my questions. I am building a rod to throw live eels & bucktails for cobia. Reel is a Shimano Stradic 8000. Plan on using 40-50 lb braid on the reel

I like the feel of this rod but of course want to build it myself. Any blank suggestions that fall in line with this description? Designed for jerk baits like the Megabass X-80 TRICK DARTER, VISION ONETEN, and MAGNUM, the Megabass OROCHI XX 68XX JERKBAIT SPECIAL features a parabolic bend and a 6’8” length that is perfect for quick, precise rod action. Ideally suited for lure weights of ¼ to ¾oz.

Has anyone applied a couple coats of Permagloss over the final coat of epoxy? Did it turn out nice? My thought is it would add some hardness and UV protection. Also, is today's formulation of Permagloss the same as it was 10 years ago and if not is it any safer to use? I have done searches, but only find 7-10 year old topics about it being banned soon (7-10 years ago) and it obviously is stil

Finished my first attempts at making carbon fiber grips using the CFX carbon fiber grip kit, that Mud Hole offers. One grip I would term a success, the other grip, pretty much a failure. The failure was a small 3/4" long fore grip I made for a drop shot spinning rod I'm building. I'm building it with a split rear grip using an 2.35" CFX fighting butt, and an 2.25" CFX fore grip

I just received an order from Mud Hole ..... awesome customer service, and fast shipping .... as usual. Just thought I'd say that. Anyhow, part of that order was one of the CFX carbon fiber grip making kits. I'm hoping to get a couple of questions answered, and perhaps any tips those who are familiar with making these grips, may be kind enough to share. My first question is. Of course I pu

For those putting in recesses for your reel seat hood on the foam core/carbon fiber grips, are you drilling out the recess before putting the carbon fiber on, or after? I am assuming to do it before, and put the zip tie for the sleeve pushed up within the recess for a flush finish. Also, what grit should I sand to before the sleeve? I'm at 500 now, riley rods says to go all the way to superfi

It seems to me as if Riley Rods has flown the coop under less than desirable circumstances. I regret this because I have made handles for several rods and am needing more supplies for other awaiting orders. Can anyone on this forum tell me where I can obtain the the basic materials (cores / resin / graphite sleeving) to resume my efforts. Thanks a million.

After waiting for months for my foam core order from rileyrods I finally gave up. Still really want to build a foam core/carbon sleeve grip. Anyone know of a source for foam cores that is not the 18# density stuff from alps? Would prefer .25" bore, .375" is a hair big for my fly blanks but if that's all I can find I may use it.
