I'm still new to rod building, I really like the High Modulus Rods, However I seem to have a much harder time finding the spine of those type of rods. Is there a better way to find it on the Modulus rods, Or am I just getting substandard rods. Thanks

I was thinking of upgrading from my home made rod wrapper to the system being sold by mudhole with the aluminum track and soon to be upgraded to power wrapper option. I enjoy wrapping by hand and would probably not go with power option. Here is what bothers me about their setup, there is no way to adjust height of rod supports,so if using it with rod dryer option, rod could not be leveled.....whic

Apologies for this basic question. There's been lots of discussion on spine vs straightest axis. This is not quite the same question but it is a question of spine and guide orientation in relation to the spine. I normally build 1 piece rods so this has not been an issue. I have an out of production 3 piece UL blank equivalent to about 3 wt fly rod in power. It's a special blank and I

Just thought I would introduce myself to the group. First, I haven't built a rod in at least 45 years. I grew up on the west coast and as a kid / teenager i did everything from being a deckhand, pulled lobster traps, worked in fish markets, and tackle stores. I used to wrap rods on my lap, because i could't afford a machine. Now at age 62 i will be retired next month, and have decided i would lik

Hey guys so I am interested in making a spiral wrap rod. I have tried googling, but my issue is that there are a lot of different types of wraps, and some have different names for the same one. So if I am mainly making rods at the moment for freshwater bass fishing, what would you say are the main wraps I need to research and learn more about? Also how should one go about deciding if I should

Hey Guys, So I just got my first blank in today and I've read about how to find the spine on the blank, but I don't really understand. I took it out of the package and stood it up on the floor and put a hand on the tip and pushed on the side of it with my other hand and the rod bends obviously, but I don't get how that finds the spine. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

First, let me preface this post by saying that I realize this may not be ideal, or even a good idea, I just want to know if it will work well enough to try the idea out. OK. So, I have a relatively inexpensive 2 piece casting rod that I would like to try an acid wrap on. What I was thinking was to strip the second and third guides (away from the reel) off, reorient the tip-half of the rod 180*, t

I've been told there are no stupid questions, so I hope you guys don't beat me up on these. I've checked the Rodboard library and and spent a couple of hours surfing the Rodboard pages last night for answers and I'm still unsure what to do. So I'll give you the easy question first. 1. I read a post about cutting down a blank, and that to maintain the blank's characteristics you needed to remov

Stopped by MudHole on the way home from a Florida fishing trip, and on an impulse bought an Orvis Access fly rod blank. Tonight I began preparations for building on the blank, and discovered that the ferrules are not what I expected. The blank is shiny root beer colored, but the male ferrules are gray graphite, and quite long. The gap, which is the bare graphite, between the butt and third sectio

Hello rodbuilders ,I've just purchased 2 GF900M and 1 GF900L blanks . They will be used for Rock fishing for fish up to 50llb .1 medium is for spinning and the other will be for an overhead reel , I havent decided on the 900L set up as yet . I'd be intersted in any thoughts from rod builders with thoughts on configuration , spacings , guide type for braided and mono line . Any other imput or adv

I am new to rod building although I did build a few rods with some help back in the late seventies. First question: I understand the principle and how to find the spine on a one piece blank, how do you find the spine on a 2 piece blank? And the second question: What is the best thread size selection for a 12’ spinning surf road? Thanks

One more question. The rod I'm building is a 4 piece and I found the spine/spline on the 3 tip sections easy enough, but the but section is stiff enough that I'm having trouble finding the spine. Is it really that critical to find the spine on the butt section of the rod? If it matters the blank I'm using is a 10ft 5wt 4 piece MHX fly blank. I believe it is labeled a fast action but I haven't don

Curious to know what others thought was the most innovative new product introduced at the Expo this past weekend. My vote goes to the new Rodgeeks blanks. Maybe I'm a sucker for the color stuff but I thought these really stood out from the crowd!

You may remember a question i posted a week or so ago about the guides for my newest 8wt. (btw, I went with 9x size 3 snakes from Snake brand as all the runners. May use one 4 right after the stripper, or 2 strippers) Well the blank came in today. Feels like a great blank, Rainshadow RX7. It's a two piece and I've gotten the spine on the top section which is the obviously the more flexible, but f

In Florida lakes and rivers are thick fields of water lilies, frequently called bonnets, holding large bream, especially blue bream (copper head) and red-ear sunfish (shellcrackers). These fish are very powerful fighters and if you wait even a second after the bite, you are entangled in vegetation. The solution is a long stiff rod and use of braded mono for quick, reliable engagement. I've bee

I am having an issue with finding the spine on my new build. I am building on a Rainshadow ip904 and when I spine the rod, I mark it and then look down the blank and see that the bend in the tip doesnt match my spine marks. I want to build straight on the spine but dont want to have the rod look bent. Please help!

I have just bought a GWR 783C from a mail order fishing store . When I opened the tube and picked up the rod I and rolled it around my fingers and noticed the seat and the guides were 45 degrees off the strongest of the 2 spines within the blank . Whether I got one that the reel seat was glued at 4.55pm on a Friday afternoon or G Loomis ( Shimano ) don't align the reel seats with the spine of the

Here is the data I have assuming that the blank weight for a 9 foot 5 wt 4 piece fly rod is 1.6oz. The weight for the upper six single foot fly guides epoxy and thread is .01714285875% of the weight of the blank. The weight for the upper six double foot fly guides epoxy and thread is .0342857175% of the weight of the blank. The questions are: What is the math equation that would deter

Hi, I'm not a rod builder but one of your rod building buddies suggested I might be interested in your forum. I'm in the golf shaft measurimg business. I build test equipment to measure the characteristics of golf shafts. After talking to my customer it was obvious that we have a lot in common. We measure the stiffness, the zone profile and the spine and neutral planes of the golf shaft to

Furthermore to my questions relating to the positioning of guides using the 27x method i am still unsure about the correct placement. Please bear with me on this subject as what i have learnt and read in the last two days has got my head swimming and i want to understand it fully before my next build. Was looking at it today and thought as the fishing line is spiralling off the spool it forms

I've been building rods about 2 years and have just completed rod #24, mostly fly rods with the odd spinning rod thrown in. I'm comfortable with my procedures and the rods all look good and fish well. I do not sell rods. I pulled out my first rod yesterday, It's a 9 foot RX7 Batson Salmon rod-IST1085 to be exact. That rod has been to Alaska twice, both times loaned out to my brother, and i

In recent days, I have watched a few different fishing tournaments, as well as a variety of fishing shows. Then, I couple that information with the days that I have spent on the water fishing and have come to the conclusion, that distance casting - as seems to be emphasized by some rod builders seem to be far from the typical fisherman's day. i.e. over the years and having read the hundred

I did a search and it had alot of good info. but getting ready to start rod #3 and been told you need to find the spine and told that with todays blanks there is no need to locate the spine. What do most rod builders do? What a great hobby to have.

So, while building my rod, I was playing around with my Sages and a TFO and noticed that the guides seem to be wrapped on a 90 from the spine. Is this my imagination or does this sound right? It makes sense in a way because most people including me, at least when throwing shorter casts, seem to throw with the rod at a bit of an angle Am I correct? I ended up putting mine on the inside of the

I need some advice- St Croix gives our High School club a really, really, great deal on cosmetic second quality rod blanks- as a general rule they are in outstanding shape. Here is my problem: some of the blanks have the top two to three inches crooked. Should we cut this part off or should we just ignore it? How crooked is crooked? What are the concerns in terms of trimming the blanks shorter?

Here's a question for you rod builders. I'm a new rod builder, working on my fifth rod. I'm happy with my first four rods. But with my fifth rod something different happened. After mounting the handle and grip I temporarily located the guides, did a static test, everything looked fine. So I went out and did a test cast. This is where I ran into a problem. When casting, the casting plug is

I was reading an earlier post of a situation where a rod was being splined and broke. There were several subtopics that spawned off of the main subject however, the one that really caught my eye was some rod builders don't spline their rods or at least it's not that important. The question for a beginning builder as myself is To Spline or Not To Spline? Is it that important or not? I'm certainly
