Casey I live on the east coast, therefore I'm a little behind on VOC oriented products. Solvent based clear over waterborne works fine, however it's the long dry time that stinks. You have to make absolute sure your base is dry, because if you don't your in for a long night. Haven't used the EC700 or 750, but it isn't a waterborne clear. It's made to topcoat waterborne base. Sikkens is worki

Just a thought. Bill, the new waterborne paint systems are taking over. However, its just the basecoat that is waterborne for now. Your typical sealer has very little reducer added, and most the new high solids clears don't require any reducer just hardner. Basecoats typically mix 1:1 with reducer, making it the most VOC rich part of the process. New clears are in the testing stage, but ther

No trouble at all if you paint cars for a living. I mix approx. 6 qts of clear(4 to 6 spot jobs) daily. Add a coat to my rod wraps while in the booth. Just a thought. Thanks for your input, might just give it a try.

The previous topic got me to thinking. How would a 2k automotive finish work applied to a wrap via spatula or brush work. Today's high solids clears are much thicker than earlier urethane clears. Maybe 4 to 5 coats. It seems like it would hold up almost as well as Permagloss, with a slightly thicker build. UV inhibitors are already in the mix, and it would most likely have more gloss than ep

Also 2k automotive clears have a certain amount of flex. If you research flex additive(at least PPG's), you will find they evaporate in less than six months. The real advantage is getting flexible parts(usually a bumper) on the car with out cracking the paint.

Someone asked for an idea for Orange Candy. I used Coats and Clark gold metallic for the base wrap, coated it with epoxy, then wrapped over that with Gudebrod #221 Orange size A. Topped it off with one coat of Flex Coat high build. Photo in my gallery.

I have posted photos before with ease. Now I log into my photo account, click on upload photo, and choose guide wraps. Then I upload photo after typing my description, it says uploading but nothing. It takes me to my account and shows the two older photos I posted. Am I doing something wrong? It's a cheaper Nikon Cool Pix 8 megapixel.

Hi Peter, I haven't been building long, but I have a few pointers. I built this exact rod using REC recoil rsf guides. I performed a static test, measured AA, and found the blanks ERN. I believe it is of utmost importance to do these tests. I will look through that rod's file for the ERN and AA my blank had. Really important to me for the proper line weight for the rod. Also all those guide

Thanks Tom! I hadn't thought about the difference between gold and silver under a candy(thread), being virtually unnoticeable in an area that small. I have an extra guide I will try on scrap blank. By the way the Fuji Y guides have locking tabs, should I still use the Forhan locking wrap?

I am building a surf rod using Fuji GYAG guides. As you know these guides a gold tone, and I plan on wrapping orange Gudebrod size A over a metallic gold thread(orange candy). This is the my dilemma. Since these guides are already gold, I thought about underwrapping with the gold thread, then wrapping over guide foot and underwraps with the orange. Problem is I won't be able to prep the guide

Hey, Peter. I'm not as experienced as some of the others, but here's my method. Like the others I bought some dental bands off of @#*!. I usually put on at least twice as many as I need and I always use two per guide. One band near the ring of the guide, the other a few mm from the start of the guide foot. I then apply tape where I want to start my wrap, so I can pack against the tape. Afte

I am in Beaufort, NC on family vacation and wanted to know if there is any place that sales rod building components near by. I will be leaving tomorrow and traveling back to Boone, NC. I don't mind stopping on the way back home if I have to. I really need a fuji gold tip top with alconite ring in sz. 12 ring. And a gold hook keep as well. Any help would be appreciated.

What are your thoughts on the new K series? Got a couple surf rod builds and can't decide between the K series and the YAG. I was wondering mostly about tangles. Any input would help.

My first new concept spinning rod build and I have a few questions. It's an 8 ft. pier/surf rod and the spool face of the reel measures 52mm. If I read the library article correctly and done my math hasn't failed me, that puts my choker guide at around 55 in. That leaves me with 22 in. of rod after the choker. Is that ok? I mean I know it's kinda of a rough guess and I should static and test cas

Barry great idea as usual! James sorry for the lack of info. Spinning outfit, casting 2oz pyramids with cut bait, and the occasional gotcha plug. NC coast Spanish, Blues, and some Puppy Drums. Most fish will be under 20 lbs. This isn't going to be a very specific build such as the fly rods I normally build. It will also be used of the pier as well as a the surf. Maybe surf rod was a littl

I'm building a Batson SW967F (8 foot) as a surf rod. I was thinking about doing a 12" long rear grip, then the reel seat(backwards to keep the nut from loosening while casting?), and a 4" foregrip. Does this sound ok? I have 1/8" thick cork tape, some automotive double sided tape, cord, and x flock shrink tube. I plan on wrapping both grips in the cork, then the automotive tape

Drew, I should have been a little more informative. Every fly rod build to date save for one no name blank, I have built with either RSF or RSFX REC guides. This is my personal rod and I would like to explore micros so I could recommend them on future builds. It's always nice to have a rod handy for someone to cast. I am a huge REC fan myself. However at .68 per guide compared to 3.00 for th

I'm building an extremely light weight MHX 3 piece 7 ft 3 wt fly rod. Mostly going after native trout in the mtns. of NC. I'm using cork for a slip ring reel seat. Thinking about a carbon fiber grip and micro guides. I understand Mr. Kirkman has been using Pac Bay minima4 micro guides. Just wondering which catalog number? I'm assuming these aren't the new Pac Bay Minima fly guides. Should I u

Thanks guys great info. I built 2 rods on batson rx7 blanks. One of them a 6'6" 2wt., the other a 7'6" 5 wt.(both his choice). I'm finished with the 2wt. And the 5 wt. Is ready for epoxy. Without casting either he wiggled them and said the 2wt felt much better(not as stiff) as the 5 wt. I thought to myself I can't imagine why a 6'6" 2wt would feel more "limber" than a

I'm just wondering how well the old wiggle test works for graphite. First thing everyone does with the fly rods I've built is pick up and wiggle them. Then proceed to tell me which one is the best. Sometimes the rods aren't even finished and the are comparing them to a completed rod. I'd like to hear your opinions on this test.

Hi guys, a buddy of mine just found out he has cancer. He is a great musician (won and placed top 5 in many fiddler conventions) and an even better person. If you look up Bluegrass 1101 he is the guitar player, and his banjo player now plays in our band. The banjo player has decided to put together a benefit to help his family with financial hard ships. His wife thought he was having a stroke(

Thanks Tom. I won't be wrapping immediately after, I just do my wood and cork work at my brother-in-laws shop. Then bring it home to wrap guides, epoxy, ect. Should I just tape the reel on?

I recently bought some very, very small ligatures from %&@$. The ones I bought were .035 ID! They even worked on a 2 wt. fly rod tip section securing sf recoils. Slide several extra on the blank. Sometimes I use more than one per guide for extra support. Makes static test a breeze. Email me if you need the guys profile name. I sent a best offer and won 1000 bands for $5 shipped. Get se

Any thoughts on a center line marking tool? I use one to mark each section on the straightest axis, then mark guide location during static test. I then wipe off the centerline except at guide locations. I always follow up with an "eye-balling" as described by Mr. Boettcher before epoxy application.
