125. Re: Cork
I( pretty much quit buying cork a few years ago due to the high cost/low quality and lack of any standard consistency. I use wood, burl or exotic cork and people love it and I know exactly what I'm getting when I order it

Hi Col, What is the purpose of using both wing nuts AND paper clips?? The paper clips are more than adequate enough to do the the job alone and a LOT easier that messing with wing nuts.

Try using the large "paper clips" from any office supply store instead of wing nuts. They are quickly/easily adjusted and won't slip I also use "screw protectors" from the hardwware store on each end of the spring. Throw away the solid portion and slide the piece with the hole over each end of your threaded rod (fits perfectly on a 1/4' threaded rod) and it will allow eve

Randolph, Epoxy sensitivity is far more common than you think. It is serious and cannot be reversed. There are builders who frequent this forum who have developed serious respiratory problems. among other things. On the advice of my doctors, I use nitrile gloves and wear a respirator when working with epoxies and/or solvents. It didn't hit me until I was over 70 and it ain't fun!!!

I'm building a couple combo fly/spinning rods on MHX 8' 3 wt 4pc blanks. My question is does anyone have a formula or opinion as to what the line and lure weight range would be for the rod in spinning configuration??

I roll mine up fairly tight and put a rubber band around them. I have a plastic storage box with quite a few of them in it and some Were purchased at the EXPO a couple years ago. They are in excellent shape

I'm starting to build 3 of them on MHX 4 pc fly blanks! Mine will be fly/spin convertible but a straight spinning rod on the blank would work fine

132. Re: Grips
I use a lot of plastic from bottles and things and what I have found to be very effective is to drill or punch several holes in the surface of the rings so that the epoxy (I use "Quick Bond) will squeeze through and provide a bond between the cork or wood on both sides of the plastic.Like Roger, I drill a larger hole in my plastic or metal trim rings so reaming has no effect on them. I alwa

Roger, Why Not??? I feel that the Microwave system is an all around superior system for spinning rods but don't know a lot about fly rods. Chris, Michael and Bill What do you think about using Minima 5 or 6's for running guides?? Chris, this is all your fault LOL! I fwll in love with that spin/fly rod you had at the Michigan Roundup Thanks for the comments/suggestions

This may sound weird but I am going to build a switchable Fly/Spinning rod for myself (MHX 4wt 4pc) and am curious if their would be any advantage (or disadvantage) to using Microwave guides. It will more than likely see more use in spinning configuration. If nothing else, it will sure get a lot of strange looks LOL! Any thoughts??

Looking good, Col!! For a change up from the craft foam. Get some 12" linoleum/vinyl floor tiles and use your hole saw. Make great trim rings and come in carious colors/patterns. VERY inexpensive

Just replace the rod with a piece of threaded rod that is long enough to handle the Madeira spools/ The threaded rod is very inexpensive and available at any hardware store.

Most, build on the straightest axis and ignore the spine. It has no relevance and I don't even know anyone that checks for the spine anymore

There are some great adhesives for plastic to plastic. They "melt" the plastic together to bond them and work great with plastic but not necessarily with cork. All you can do is experiment

I do quite a bit of plastic to cork and I have found that if you drill or punch some holes in the face of the plastic, your glue will extend through the holes and bond cork to cork as well as the plastic to cork. How are you turning?? Mandrel? you can use inexpensive drill stops on each end of the grip to put tension on it.

I would strongly recommend holding off until you do your research. I have seen so many get impatient and find out (several hundred bucks later that what they have just won't do what you now want to do! Keep in mind that turning is highly addictive. Like many builders, I started out with a Grizzly Hobby Lathe (and wish I still had it!) It's nice and portable. Mount it on a board, carry it o

This was my 9th Expo and I can honestly say that each one was better than the last (not sure how next tear can be better than this one, though!) Those that have never attended one can't comprehend it. It's much more than a Custom Rod Show Rodbuilders (at least the ones that hang out here) are the greatest bunch of people in the world! For me, it's so much more than the great deals and mass
