Tom,
You really outdid yourself on this issue! One of the better onesSome people probably don't want to hear it, but the article on the rodbuilding industry really nailed it!!!
If the industry doesn't get together and tighten up on it, they will ultimately implode and WE will be the big losers.

Mark,
You need to call or e-mail vendors to see what they have! Very few sites are remotely up do date and some haven't been updated in many moons!!!!

7144. Re: Thread Kit ?
I don't think that you would save by buying "kits" I'm sure that you will end up with a number of colors that you will never use. Unless you are going to be building really heavy duty salt rods, I wouldn't bother with anything other yhan size "A".
You will have to decide whether you want to use Nylon or NCP. NCP does not require CP to maintain it's spool color and it is

I use quite a few SCII & SCIII spining and casting blanks and really like the. They are excellent blanks (They do make SCII). I hope they aren't getting rid of those

I actually get better results by hand turning. Like Don said, turn rod 180 degrees about every 5 - 10 minutes. Make sure the rod is level and turn as soon as you see the epoxy start to sag a little on the bottom.

7147. Re: Threads Revisited
Hi Cindy
Those that use Polyneon use #40 I'm not sure on the metallic but I would assume the same. I use Sulky metallics and like them. I don't know about the regular. The flat sliver is nice for tag wraps on the end of guide wraps and in butt wraps where there is no strength issues. Don't use it as guide wraps, it's not strong enough!
Do a search here for madiera and one for sulky an

As far as I know cork only comes in 1/2" rings. I know that's all that Burl comes in. You have to slice it to get thin rings. Custom Tackle Supply sells cork jigs
Here are some pix
You can get even thinner rings by sticking washers behinf the cork when you slice it.
From what I have seen there is little difference in the burl cork. I like Mudholes's. The red is really ni

7153. Re: epoxy ripples
Switching epoxies isn't going to solve your problem. They all have their quirks, etc. and behave differently. The problem isn't the finish (if it was, no one would use it), it's in the application. If you mention ANY brand, you will get half the people say it's easy and half say it's hard.
The key is to find one that has the qualities that you like (clarity, set time, etc) and then learn to u

7154. Re: Finishing
You had the right idea with the paper towel. I prefer a folded coffee filter for the same thingAcetone was your mistake. Acetone is a very strong solvent and there is no reason to ever use it near a blank (or your lungs). Denatured alcohol is what you should have used. It is the preferred solvent. Strong enough for any rodbuilding need. Another coat of finish extending beyound the dull area m

Bill's right. Sounds like it's not packed tight. Use a magnifying glass and see if the black "blotches" aren't actuall where there are gaps in the thread. You need to pack tight

Myles,
While I was downstairs measuring it, Tom beat me to the punch! The nice thing is that it is light weight but strong (about 10 lbs) I have it mounted on a board with a handle and carry it outside to work.
I also purchased an extra Headstock piece (where the drill fits and I inserted a ATV wheel bearing in it so that I can replace the Tailstock with it and do cork/EVA right on the blan

If you are interested in an inexpensive lathe for cork, here is a very popular one with builders.
It is drill powered and even with the 1/2" drill from Grizzley it's about $75
Here is a link to a picture of mine
You can just do a search om this site for grizzly and you will get a ton of info/opinions

7160. Re: Site Suggestion
I agree with Jim. I don't know, but I would imagine that a significant number of the subscriptions come from the web site. I never heard of Rodmaker until I stumbled across this site and I'm sure that is the case for many.
The two complement each other very well and I'm sure that it is a strong benefit to the sponsors. The magazine (any magazine) reaches only a VERY small portion of the peo

7161. New Site E-mail Feature
I just noticed that when you click on a poster's name, you get their profile instead of a direct e-mail link. I assume that you don't even get that if the poster isn't registered. Is that feature going to be available in this version???

I think you need to be able to "Mark All Read", so you don't have to open every post (whether or not you want to read it) to get rid of the "NEW"
Other than that, It's great

7163. Re: Marble Wraps???
If you are using something like Testor's paint, let it settle good and pour as much of the solvent off as you can. You want the thick pigment so you use very little on a toothpick. There is an article in the library above
