61. Re: Humidity
Thanks, Tom! Yes, I am speaking of epoxy. I didn't finish my nephew's 4-wt., 8'6" fly rod (a graduation gift)because of the high humidity. That means I can begin finishing it tonight. Thanks

62. Humidity
I live in Central Pennsylvania and the humidity gets high here in the summer. I was wondering, is there a humidity percentage mark I can go by, which I can use as a standard for finishing rods. My buddy advised me not finish rods in high humidity. I took that under advisement, but wonder if there is a certain point when it's okay. Example: 90%, 75%, 50% humidity?

63. spinning reel
My college student nephew is looking for a medium size spinning reel (4 to 10-pound) test line. Is there anything good out there for about $50 or $60 dollars? I haven't shopped for a reel in years after I turned to fly fishing. Thanks

Darin: My heartfelt sympathy goes to you. Your wife is just fishing another stretch of creek. You'll catch up to her one day at the next pool.

65. blank colors
I have a newby type of question! Why is it that all rod blanks seem to be colored spruce green or matte gray? Is there a logical reason for this? I'd sure like to work on a decent brown or blue blank.

Does finish permeate metallic thread as well as it does regular thread? I've been using Sulky's Metallic thread to wrap my rods. Just wondering!

I've built only two spinning rods and I've used the Concept guide Method for both. But, I can't help wondering if it makes that much difference in casting distance, etc.? I cast a similar rod with the normal graduated progression of guides to the tip and it seemed to cast just as well. I don't know because I'm very new at this. I only say this because I cast both styles. Any opinions or instruct

I am confused about how to shop for cork handles or rings. Is there a guide somewhere that gives the length of handles or styles for various types of rod blanks, such as spinning and fly rod?

Hi John! When you use a spatula do you get a football shape finish? I don't really like that big, oblong finish on my guides. I like the old-style leveled finish.

70. signing name
I've placed 2 coats of Crystal Coat on a spinning rod blank, the last yesterday at about 11 AM. Can I still write a name on the finish with acrylic paint along with the decal and add the final coat of finish? I guess what I'm asking is can I write with acrylic on the finish before I put the final coat of finish on it?
Thanks

71. cleaning brushes
Would someone tell me what's best to use as a brush cleaner? I think my buddy is ticked because I called him too many times yesterday for advise. Help, please!

What brand of kind of brushes are best for applying finish? Anybody care to give me some suggestions? I think Sable brushes are recommended by some. Thanks!

Has anyone ever tried signing a rod by wood burning a wooden insert? If so, was it hard to do?

What I meant was an alternative solution to using a nickel/silver winding check or a winding check period.

Are there directions for building an epoxu ramp? I used the search and didn't find anything. Maybe I looked int he wrong place.

How do you order winding checks? Do you measure with a calipher and then order 2 or 3 sizes to get the correct one? What's the best way to get close with the size. Also, LA Garcia's video suggested the check should slide down the blank to within an inch or 2 of the handle. You should then file it to fit.
Also, are there different winding checks for spinning rods?

How can I finish a rod where the winding check normally is seated? I guess I'm asking are there other options? On a spinning rod a small winding check looks really lonesome on the cork handle.
Thanks

81. safety
Are the fumes from Epoxy and Finish harmful? I build rods on my kitchen table, and naturally, the doors and windows are closed in the winter. Am I killing my lungs?

Hi Steve! I was only kidding about the spelling and the message, although it is spelled "VESTIGIAL." I wasn't being smart, hopefully, a bit humorous. I'm not very smart, especially when it comes to building rods. Is there such a thing as a bridge guide or not? I'm still not sure about that thread. Maybe it is the fumes getting to my brain.
Respectfully yours,
Bruce

Are you guys saying that the Concept Guide Method is only good for the spinning reel that's used to line up the guides?
Forum: rodboard 18 years ago
Bruce A. Tomaselli
Wow! You have some book learnin' in your brain. LOL. Couldn't find '"vistigial" in the dictonary. The correct spelling of awkward is awkward. Anyhow, being a newbie, as they say, what in the heck is a bridge guide and what was your question? I'm thinking I could learn something, but I'm not sure what! Robin Trower! There's a name I haven't heard for awhile. Isn't he a 70s dude?

To the guys that offered help, I backed off on my guide wraps and was able to execute the Forham Wrap very neatly, and with no problems. What would I do without this site! I'd have to bother my buddy, Big Chief Buffalo Nickel, all the time. Thanks again, Goose

Well, guys from your posts I'm pretty certain that I must have wrapped up the guide leg. I'll re-wrap the guides tonight and let you know how I make out tomorrow. I do have those issues of RodMaker. I don't throw any of those away. Thanks for your help!

89. Re: Forham wrap
Hi Tom! Yes, I used the article in the library, that's how I learned it. It seems that I can't get the thread to go under the back of the guide, for the Forham wraps to snug together. I've tried to use a burnisher to push them together but they won't stay. Do you think I'm wrapping too far up the guidefoot? The method works great for me otherwise.

90. Forham wrap
I am placing black Fuji Alconite single foot guides on a 9' fly rod. I'm not at home now to say for sure, but I'm having the hardest time using the Forham wrap on the larger guides, I think they're the size 8 or 10 single foot guides (BLAG). I have no trouble performing the wrap on the smaller guides. Anyone have this problem?
