Well the weather is starting to cool off and my favorite time to fish is fast approaching, ice fishing. I have a few ideas and questions on guides for ice rods. I primarily fish from a portable so I was thinking about using micros on my inside rod. Has anyone tried this and how did you like it? Larger guides #7 or #8's for outside rods and for slip bobbers. Most likely 8's. I built

I haven't wrapped very many rods, two to be exact, so take that into consideration with my answer. But I've taken a small file and tapered the guide foot down even more so than what it comes from the factory and I haven't had too bad of luck with using size A. When I do file it I've found it's easiest to hold the eye of the guide between my index and thumb and place the foot on a hard surface s

Well, I tried the test on the dowel and singed the fuzzies, but it doesn't take them down completely. It appears that the nylon core melts into a tiny ball right next to the wrap. You have to look close to see it, but it's most certainly there. Roger, I've thought of your approach too and that's probably the best way. But I'm running short on time to get this rod done before our trip (It's

The brand of metallic is from a reputable company, but unfortuantely this spool slipped by QC. I may try and wrap a dowel with the thread and see how well I can get the fuzzies to singe with the side of the flame. If that doesn't work out too well I'll try the first coat of finish approach. Sounds like a plan.

My new spool of metallic thread has fuzzies coming off of it like crazy. I tied all the guides on already WITHOUT finish, hoping I can fix them after the fact. So here's my question. What's the best way to fix it; Singe them with a standard "lighter" (I don't have an alcohol burner) I'm a little worried about soot, OR apply the first coat of finish and carefully cut them off, but I d

Thanks, Bill point well taken. Oh, I didn't reconfigure my dimensioner before I printed it. I'm beginning to see that I'm thinking on this way too much. I need to just buy the darn guides and get it going and let the guides fall where they may along the line. Wade

I didn't know how big of a deal it is to fall outside of the 4" range for the first reducing guide. If you do which is better, closer or farther from reel or whichever is closer to the window. Tom, I'm not trying to say that the system doesn't work. Just trying to find what style guide would "roughly" get me close or fall within the criteria you've described in your article.

I've been trying to layout what I need for guides on a Rainshadow 6'6" Spinjig, matched up w/ a tennessee handle and Pflueger President 6735. The face measures 1.75" thus putting my choker guide at 47.25" from the face of the reel. After laying that out and then figuring out where my reel will be placed on the handle and where the center of the spool will be I made my measurement

Has anyone built in a "ruler" into their rods? And did you like it? What I was thinking of is putting a couple wraps of thread every inch starting at 12" from the front of the handle so I would have a built in ruler for when I practice CPR (Catch Picture Release). Then I'd have something quick and easy.

Thank you Tom. I thought that was the case, but in my mind it's better to ask first than suffer the consequeces.

Tom, Which issue is that in and how do can we get a copy. I'm in the same boat (pun intended) and a litte confused on the 27x method. I was measuring my spool diameter and then got to thinking. Do I measure the inner diameter (no line) or outer diameter (full of line). I also had heard from a reputable source that a rule of thumb was 1/2 the spool diameter for the first guide. Again th

George, Thanks for the tip. I don't think we're going to do a whole lot of portaging and if we do I'm sure they'll be short. We'll be having a lot of middle school age kids (father/son outing) so I'm sure we'll keep things pretty simple. But having it break down is a very good point and I'll keep that in mind if we do this next year (I hope so) another good excuse to make a rod. I just hope

Darrin, Those look like nice guides also, not to metion a little less expensive than the ones I was looking at. Just selecting guides is enough to make a guys head spin. Between choosing ring material, what ring size to use, proper guide spacing, what guide to use at what spacing, and color, then match it with some thread. Holy Cow it doesn't seem to end!!! I'll eventually get somethin

Darrin - Yes I actually was looking at your guides. Specifically the BNTA A-frames or the BCSF spinning guides. Roger - Thank you on the offer, I'll do that.

Okay, I've made an ice rod and caught the bug. I'm going on a canoe trip to the BWCA this summer and what better excuse to build a rod before the trip. I anticipate fishing for walleye, smallmouth, and possibly some pike so I'll need a rod to cover those species and yet be able to fish the small rivers we have here in NE Iowa for smallmouth and walleye. Let me state that I have yet to purchase an
