Hi Tom
I do mount the butt and even use a small line level to assure the butt is in correct alignment but it is still subject to line of sight. I like the idea of a sighting rod mounted to the slot in the ferrule but once again the slot is on the horizontal plane and I need the vertical

I have an extremely hard time lining up my roller tip top on rods with unibutts, if the tip is not in line with the reel seat on the unibutt it fouls up the rod. Of course the unibutts have the mating slot opposite to the vertical so you can't use it to sight on the tip. I've tried a laser but its has to be aligned perfectly. Surely there is an accuarte way to do this , please help this is drivin

Thank you all for your input, I am not trying to trash Lamiglas only trying to find out if there are similar problems, so far it seems not. The rods were flexed using the palm and snapped in the upper third of the blank. I looked at the article on rod breakage and to me it looks like the "high sticking" photos but as I said the rods never left the shop. The rods in question were rated 15

Hi Jim:
Thanks for your input and advice, although Lamiglas has replaced rods in the past this is not the road I want to go down, I expect a top notch AMERICAN made rod to have some QC behind it IE: stress testing prior to shipping, now I am guilty of not pushing the limits of this particular blank prior to the build ( WON"T HAPPEN AGAIN) but I do expect more out of Lamiglas. I will poin

Has anyone experienced rod breakage using Lamiglas blanks, I have had three break just spining them, Lamiglas replaced with different models. I just made and sold two IC 84H Inshore Classic Graphite blanks, these are expensive blanks and I did a complex butt wrap, expensive reel seat and titanium guides, my customer picked them up and flexed one rod right in front of me and it snapped in the uppe

38. Guide alignment
As I get older and my eyes aren't as sharp, I sometimes have trouble with guide alignment. I would like to hear from others on their alignment methods. Even before i put on the epoxy and I think all is well I sometimes find some that are off, by then it is too late. I have experimented with a laser but its not foolproof.

39. Weave thread
I am about to start my first weave and would like some thread info before buying same. I have watched the Doc Ski videos where he suggests "D" thread for the weave and "E" thread for the wrap, "E" is no longer available or it least I can't find it. Jim upton says one size difference between weave and wrap and use smallest diameter for clean results, so if I choose to

40. Gimbal Alignment
I have a somewhat hard time aligning the gimbal with the center of the reel seat and then the tip top, I would appreciate any tips on aligning these parts. I have a laser but sometimes its hard to center it on the center of the tip top.

I'm building some 50# stubbie stand up rods, because the rod blanks are shorties and the foregrips are long for stand up I'm left with about 30" of blank from the tip, should I use five guides as I normally do or just use four.

45. Re: Rod grips
Hello Billy:
The grip is 1.0 ID, I put the grip on the blank up to where it is snug then i back it off and coat the blank with rod bond, once I push and it starts to bind I can't push any further even with a push block, all I do is compress the grip and ruin it.
Thanks

46. Rod grips
I am building a 130 class IGFA rod and cannot get a grip onto the blank. The rod has a butt OD of 1.15 which is standard for a rod of that class, my grips are EVA 1.0 but I cannot get them to stretch onto the blank, I have used rod bond, ivory liquid, and an air compressor but nothing helps, the grips are so thin in that size that all I do is ruin them, I don't see them any larger than 1.0, any h

48. Box Wraps
I am fairly new to rod building and do pretty good work on diamonds , chevrons etc, my problem is when I have to make a box and work inward in the box and outward outside the box ( St John's Cross ) I can never get a good layout and constantly fight the threads to try and make it work. I usually end up starting over. Can someone give me some tips.
Thanks

49. Metallic thread
I need some help, I am trying to do a butt wrap using double spacing on a rod with an OD of 40mm, I am doing a two tone star. I have measured precisely and the first set of threads are right on the marks but I cannot get the subsequent threads to lie against the others, I have started over three times to no avail, I have now switched to regular thread and I am not having a problem, what am I doin

I started building my own rods last winter and enjoyed using them all summer, I just brought them home and noticed that on a couple of rods , just at either end of the butt wrap, the epoxy seems to have pulled away and looks like there is none there. These are gaps in the epoxy of up to 1/4" and if you look at the rod it looks like none was ever put there yet adjacent to the gap it looks lik

I probably threw everyone off when I asked about wood hosels, on the Penn International rods they have a tapered wood piece just forward of the foregrip which they wrap thread around so that it tapers from the foregrip to the blank, due to the thickness of the foregrip this piece give the rod a very distinctive look, they look like a hosel but you don't see any of the wood trim, should I just cut

I just purchased some Pac Bay graphite reel seats, they came in four pieces, an insert the two hoods and a decorative piece for between the hoods. What is the correct way to assemble these, I'm assuming that you epoxy the insert tube to the blank and then assemble the other pieces when the epoxy dries, is this correct? Also can anyone tell me what a Mag Bass blank is?

54. P_Touch Labels
Has anyone had any experience using laminated labels, like P-Touch, for signatures on rod blanks? I tried using them but they delaminated when I put on the epoxy. These would be great to use because you can make them as you need.

I have switched from Flex Coat high build epoxy to American Tackle high build because of the faster cure time, American says their product has less bubbles but I find there are many more which I have to heat with my torch,I never had to heat the Flex Coat, just blowing on it removed all of the bubbles, anyone else having noticed this or am I doing something wrong, also are there any other epoxies
