am getting ready to build my CTS 5-8 heaver. I am debating about what size guides to put on, I have really been thinking of doing 20-16-12, then 10s all the way out. Has anyone used this set up? I use a alberto kot and will be mostly using a torium14 or a saltist 20h on this rod. I may put my 30h on for cobes. Im concerned about a knot catching, but really dont think that a 10 is to small. I dont

I can say that after 2 wraps I moved on to a closed wrap, nothing spectacular, but it turned out nice. The more you do the easier it gets, I am moving on to harder things now, but if you are planning on doing many I would reccommend the visual wrap software, I dont own it yet, but will by the end of the week. I have seen enough of it to know that it will make your life easier. you can preview an

Maybe you can try a polishing compound, I wouldnt use a buffing compound, because their abrasives are pretty tough

I personally dont think you can go wrong with either of those blanks myself. I would check with him and see if he needs the 11' rod over the 10. He may already have a 11' rod in that action and is looking for a 10'. B ut I still dont think you can go wrong with either

Where is he fishing and what is he targeting? Up north a lot of guys perfer a glass rod, down south and in the outer banks area graphite and composites rule. Another huge factor is what he is targeting, is he a power caster? A few answers to these and I know you'll get some good options

I am getting ready to build my son a surf rod. I have a rainshadow SU1387 blank. I am hoping that there is some kind of reel seet that is not epoxied in. I have seen them on St. Croix surf rods before I think it was. Can someone please point me in the right direction of where to get these. I dont want to use coasters because I dont think they are comfortable to fish with myself, and Im sure with

The one I have is labeled ATC 6-10, I would say it is not a 6n bait rod. I purchases a CTS 5-8 at the show also that is a 6n bait and the 2 dont compare. The CTS is at least twice as stiff as the ATC. Maybe there was some mishap with some labels. I also have 2 rainshadow 1387 blanks that feel heavier to me. I know that they arent a 6n bait rod, not with a power cast anyway. I plan on mocking up t

Your right Stephen, it is not a 8n bait rod, and I am not sure it would be a good 6n bait rod. Maybe 5 max I think your dead on with the 3 oz hopkins though. When I firs tugged on it i thought it was stiffer than it actually is. I may have to find another blank now :)

The ones I got had 6-10 on them, maybe we got the same ones, They were 60 at fishsticks. Its hard to tell with me just pulling on one, I'll compare it to a 6 n bait rod I have and see how it stacks up.But then again it is not going to be anywhere near as stiff as your WRI rods Steve. I have done a pretty good search and cant come up with anything, Maybe Scott has the information somewhere.

I was really thinking it was a 8n bait rod myself. It is kind of hard for me to tell, just by pulling on one a bit. The main reason I am extending it is because thats what someone wants. I am building it for my uncle as a gift, and he has been looking for a 6-8 n bait rod for the Outer Banks. Really looking for that 12' to help and keep it out of the breakers more than anything. Any suggestions

While at the Expo I purchased a 11" ATC surf blank with 6-10 on it. I am curious if anyone has any experience with this blank? Will it throw 6-10, what is the "sweet" spot for weight on it. How good of a blank is this, I have heard they were a great blank producer untill the went belly up. I am planning on extending it 12". Any help would be appreciated

Im relatively new to building myself. I was having the same problem you were describing, and a bubble issue. Well after reading everything on here I thried to do what everyone is telling you , very thin coats, and wicking of teh excess. I also didnt turn my dryer motor on for about 45 min. hand turning it when nessecary. well I am happy to say that the rod that I finished yesterday is perfect. It

Ok, while at the show this weekend I bought this blank. I am planning on building it for my grandfather, As a child it was my grandfather and uncle who took me fishing and instilled that passion deep in my heart. I want to build him a rod that he can use for multiple purposes. It will mainly be used for surf fishing and some light pier fishing. I am thinking that I want to use Lowriders on this

I was lucky enough to attend the expo this past weekend. I brought my 8yr old with me, who is working on his first rod. He really wanted to go check out the NERBS booth, because we have spent hours looking at Billy's wraps online. When we got to the booth Billy gave my son a signed copy of his book for free, and chatted with him. While a small gesture to most this was the highlight of the day for

First Rodmaker Magazine, it has loads of great information. As to placement goes there are several placement guides out there, I know that mudhole has one on their page. A easy way to start is to take a comprable factory or existing rod you have and start with its measurements. Do a static test and tweek your guides from there. Hope this helps. Also I just finished my 3rd rod, its a very rewardin

I have personally used the U-40 and ChromaSeal. I would highly reccommend the ChromaSeal. I had a few rods with the U-40 that had a milky look where the CP was applied. I am sure that I let it dry long enough before I applied any epoxy, but being new to rod building I still may have made a mistake to cause this. I havent had this issue with the ChromaSeal though. I also have not used it on a feat
