Wrapping a sage VXP 4 wt for a customer . Now on some fly blanks i wrap the ferule. These look like they may not need it and their website does not say either way. As the blank is just at 1.1 oz on my scale i am reluctant to add extra mass of the wrap plus two coats of PG. Anyone know how they stand up without a ferule wrap?

You cannot go wrong with the Rx6 or 7 Batsons or the Pac Bay are decent yet tough. Call Utmost and see what they have at a price you want to pay.

Thanks Bill, looks like an Xi3 too so makes the backup role even better. I will try out an 8 wt and see if it works out

I am trying to find an equivalent blank to the GLOOMIS GLX crosscurrent blanks. In 4 piece 8 or 9 and 12 weights. Its for more robust backup rods to sage Xi3's so i am not looking for lightest, I am looking for more durable. Must still be able to throw salt flys into a wind.

Chad, i do a rx8 ti with silver grey makoi A thread and you may want to do a test wrap with it too. Try it on a section you are going to put the reel seat on or similar, you may also like it. Not see thru but i hit it with a few coats of PG : its about a 100% match to the blank. So you just have the ring sort of growing out the blank. I personally prefer it to the white silk/epoxy

Ben, its for a customer that fishes odd places: Mid east, Christmas island, Seychelles etc. Its a specialist tool for sure. from playing with it: It bends deeper into the butt than the competitors( black hole, seeker etc) i have built on. Not sure if that is good thing, first accidental GT over 50lbs will tell the tale. That is why this question was asked, i was very nervous about amount

I am building on a Jigging Master Three Kings UL blank. Spinning using Stella SW, Torzite Titanium guides. To keep the build light i was going to use a foam arbor to get the 24 mm seat he selected for his hand. But my tests show the blank is going to flex right into the seat area and beyond. So what is going to happen to that arbor? Crack? Should i be making arbors out of perhaps a few 1 i

The saltywater Race Point 200 is nice. Around $300 for blank so not cheapest but nice. Very straight blank and minimal spine, secure ferule that is going to last years if that is important to you. PE 8 60 to 140 gm lure. Stated max drag is 14kg but my mate sets his drag to 30kg on 150lb braid ( its his arms taking the shock, good luck to him) Butt section tapers thin at butt thicker

Don, just plain distance cast with the same lure and same line. Prize was bragging rights. i think it was 3/8th oz rubber lure and one of the berkley mono products as line. I even think i recall somebody bought it off of him for a ridculous amount of $$ to go away and duplicate. If pure distance in feet from point of casting is your only criteria you can get there many ways. I use

If i recall correctly, at one Expo custom builders were asked to build a 6ft 6 in rod with spinning layout and using same line and lure the winner was a Cone Of Flight layout. makes you think.........

Lynn, you would have to define 'best casting spinning rod' in a little more detail. For some folks best casting could mean: works with the widest variety of reel sizes and line types while still giving adequate performance. For some it could be accuracy. For some it could be pure distance cast yet fail horribly when fighting a large fish at the limits of the rods power. ( look at distance

Call UTMOST, they sit between the two factories and have stock of both. They might also have some older stock to match what you have.

Frank, mudhole lists them in their cataloque and has for some time. I tried to buy some at one expo and they did not have them. Said their listing as available in the catalogue was a misprint. Maybe that situation has changed? Call them. I have fished with carp blanks for actual carp as well as here in USA for other species. Its NOT my go to lure rod for anything. Its for bait and wei

Just go right thru it with reamer. Its just a piece of foam or cork so do with it as you want. Plug hole with cork plug from a hobby shop. You can buy packs of corks or wooden ones from 1/4 to 1 inch for around $1 to &2 per 50 from many hobby shops. You can get them in rubber and vinyl from hardware shops. You can get plastic plugs from most 'u assemble it' funiture sellers to c

If you are down to grinding off as your last chance you could try coating the outside of the ferule with vaseline and then soak it in coke or a similar cola drink. Few days of that and the acid will eat most the rust.

Shawn, it could be the sequence of wrapping. Hard to wrap under a seated guide if you have average or larger hands. Plan your work. Measure out and do any underwraps first. Then middle trim bands. That helps you position the actual guide too(assuming its all been taped and tested before hand). Now do CP . I only trim after cp dries, it helps keep stuff in place, not like epoxy but enou

Carlos, i use 20# braid and 20# floro leader mostly. I use 5 mm Minima 4's or 5.5 mm on size 20 microwaves as running guides and they work fine. 4's hang up enough on my knots in cold or when June grass is thick in the water that i now use 5mm.

John, sorry no. Tried gel pens not good results as the cheap paper kind of blots/runs easily. Its barely better than newspaper the stuff i got. Black fine point ballpoint pen works for me.

John, if you want to use the cash register roll i sugges fine point ball point pen, minimal fading. Gel ink blots on the rolls. But yes its good for duplication purposes primarily.

Roger, the down side is its not searchable. You have to know you are looking for Joes Bream Rod. Or SB843 etc. Even a book is searchable to an extent. Rolls and paperclips not so much. There is a reason SQl is popular in businesses. But this works for me. Once found the rebuild is trivial.

I have an odd way of doing it that works for me. I use the receipt roll from a cash register. Lay it next to built rod and can mark where i placed guides what they were, grips etc. Make notes as to thread and guide makes models etc and then roll it up to about 2 inches then squish it up flat and put a paper clip over it. Write on outside things like Joes Bream Rod , so i can find it. I

Grind an old toothbrush handle into a triangular shape( smoothe with up to 600 grit) to make an awesom thread burnishing and packing tool. Will not scratch your blank. Will take off old epoxy. Or pay a few dollars and buy one. Either way i would want one. Good light makes it easier too.

Eric, i would add one thing to what Roger said: look at a cheap used UPS for desktop computer systems. One that would drive your drier for sufficiently long that the epoxy you use will dry beyond sag point should power fail. Summer is coming and rolling blackouts may be in your future.

Robert: you are sort of right on that appealing to more people with guides on top. But then you are in competition with big box store. If you intend to sell rods for profit and for any length of time, your friend may need to look for a different type of client. You cannot compete with the big box stores as a custom builder. But big box in turn cannot provide rods for the guy who knows h

If handle is too long to get balance andyour belly too large you going to have a bad day fishing. Especially if you also cast right handed but need to wind the reel with right hand too: that shuffle can cost you fish and makes for frustation. I prefer a tip heavy rod for some presentations, if i am fishing tip down it just makes sense for that to be the position the rod wants to sit. Jerkb
