The guide can only place as much force against the line as the blank can exert.
The tip of the blank, being small in diameter, can exert very little force against the guide or the line.
The butt of the rod, being much larger, can exert more force against the guide or the line.
To exert force the guide must have resistance supplied by the blank.

Jeff,
Pickup a 6'6" to 7' ultra light spinning rod blank.
Build your fly rod and try various fly line weights.
Should be a 4-5 weight. This handles wind better and is more flexible for fishing conditions.

Jeff,
I would use 7 guides spaced as follows
Distance from tip
3.8 ; 8.4 ; 14.2 ; 21.4 ; 30.3 ; 41.4 ; 55.2
Light wire #1 single foot titanium for tip 3 guides
Light wire #2 titanium snake
#3 light wire snake
#4 std wire snake
#10 alox double foot stripper
A 2 weight. Where are you pursuing the butterflies ? Sounds like a Smoky mountain stream rig.

Benjamin,
If using a standard size tip top use #2 guides
Large tip top #3
X large #4
You might also consider a 9 guide set up if the rod will be used for light tippets

Phil,
The equation for polar moment of inertia is
weight times radius squared equals the polar moment of inertia of the mass.
This must be added to the weight distribution of the blank where the center of the radius is the center of the grip where the rotation is about.
As the rod deflects the location of the guides relative to the center of rotation reduces in length.
This reduces the iner

I fill the tube with adhesive and scrape off the excess after application.

Terje,
Finish weight is a function of blank diameter. Wraps on the tip will be lighter then in the butt.
The finish weight for a double foot guide at the tip will normally be heavier then the weight of the guide.
The next step would be to utilize light wire titanium guides. This will reduce guide weight to .03.
Going to light wire titanium single foot guides will cut finish weight in half.

Adding a 280 grain line I believe will slow the response to acceptable casting levels.
I don't know about the printed claim of casting 1/6 ounce however.
How much weight are you casting ?

Thanks, gentlemen
This appeared a promising candidate but the ERN is too high for a replacement.
Still require a 7 to 8 foot rod with an ERN of 7.5 to 8.5.
Per Spencer's suggestion I'll expand my search to Batson.
The goal is for an 8 weight fly rod for fishing light tippet in windy conditions.
Thanks again

I'm attempting to replace a discontinued blank.
Has anyone measured the ERN and AA of S842-2-MHX. ?
I'm looking for a fast blank with an ERN of 7.5-8.5

45. Re: Blank search
Spencer,
Good selection. Close but I feel it will be slightly under-powered. IM6 material and slightly smaller butt dia.
The St Croix Mojo bass looks promising but, I was told the blanks are not available to the US market.
Thanks,
I'll keep looking

46. Blank search
Gentlemen,
I'm looking for a blank with the following approx. specs.
8 foot ; IM7 graphite ; .370 butt dia ; 4 tip dia ; 1.7 ounces blank weight
Preferably 2-piece ; US made
The only candidate I've found, so far, has been the Sage Bass II bluegill and am looking for more options.
Thanks,
Gene

John,
Correct the stiffness is not linear. The rod deflects from the hand to the tip. The deflection increases due to rod load. The affect is cumulative over the deflected length. You can't change the deflection characteristic of the basic beam. It's built into the blank as a function of OD versus ID over the length of the taper. The load accumulates more deflection the further away from the sup

John,
As an Engineer look at the affects of polar moment of inertia and fly wheels.
Adding weight to the end of a spring driven system reduces velocity of the tip.
A rod is a spring allowing the input of potential energy as the hand is rotated. This torque is transmitted to kinetic energy through blank deflection to the tip of the rod. The energy input by the hand is fixed in velocity versus t

Base your rod weight decision on the flies you choose to fish with.
The fly size and wind resistance will determine the fly line weight you choose.
Build the rod to handle the fly line.

Mel,
The tip 3-4 guides are light wire single foot titanium of the same size.
The rest are tapered larger toward the butt with the stripper the largest. Normally a size 12 double foot stripper.
I use a progressive guide distance and believe the greater the distance between guides the greater the variation on entry angle to the guide, therefore the larger the guide diameter required.

Mel,
Been there, done that. Still have several rods built that way that have caught many fish.
I did experience a reduction in fly line life though. This is most likely due to the contact nature of the guide. Under load while playing a fish the guide acts as a scraper due to it's geometry perpendicular to the rod blank. The snake guides contact the line at an angle distributing load over distan

Mel,
I routinely build using single foot light wire titanium for the top 3 or 4 guides, changing to snake further from the tip and insert guides for the stripper and next guide up. I also typically use 9 guides for a 9' rod and 8 for an 8' rod.
The blank you are choosing is a nice casting blank and the guide weight reduction at the rod tip only improves upon an already good blank.

Don,
Based on the pictures,
I'd say the guide geometry caused a combined load and rotation while playing the fish under heavy load.
The guide frame height induced a rotational force on the blank while the blank was heavily deflected.
The force was concentrated at the blank adjacent to the wraps. The rotational force levered against the blank surface crushing the outer skin of the blank causin

Kelly,
Winston is the smoothest. Great finesse.
Sage has power and range especially the Method blanks.
St Croix is a good choice for an American made blank with a reasonable cost. Tend to cast a line size heavier then rated.
The NRX is a great casting rod but haven't seen it sold as a blank.

More likely a 6-8 weight fly rod, based on the info given.

Fine choice for a blank though a little pricey.
The Sage Method is a cannon for distance and is very smooth to boot.
Another manufacturer you might consider is Winston. Very smooth taper design.
I presume you are building a 1-hander.
Use single foot light wire titanium guides for the tip 4 guides.
Shorten the tip top barrel to reduce tip top weight.
