As a general rule personally, I see a custom rod being the quality of a commercial rod that's 2x the price. So if I spend $75 on my componets, it will come out being quality of a $150 rod. There are so many variables in rod building it's crazy. I have looked at commercial rods only to see that I don't like where the hook keeper is, what type it is, it's not the reel seat I like, or so on. Custom

They would be good for catfishing, but even better for power bass fishing! They would do great as a spinnerbait, crankbait, Zara spook, frogs etc.

Would I be able to buy nylon thread from a craft store and use it to wrap guides? If so what would I have to look out for(as in using CP etc.)?

Did a coat of CP, everything went good. The threads are not perfect but I can work on that. I plan on doing epoxy tomorrow so we will see how it goes!

I'm going to do a coat of CP to reduce the risk of bubbles, and make sure the thread is tight. I haven't built a rod in over a decade, so if I have thread problems I'd rather see it with CP and not epoxy. I appreciate all the help everyone! Posting here works a lot better than a google search. I will repost with how it goes!

I recently ordered a Mudhole CRB kit and it came with a decal. It's one of their basic models. Like Tom said though, it varies by company

I have Guderbrod color preserver that I got literally a decade ago, so is it okay to use? And do I need to apply it? Mudhole's website didn't specify, so I'm assuming so....

Well I was wrong :/ The secondary winding check won't stay in place even when I tried to glue it. It's not a big gap so I'm thinking I can just do a thread wrap to cover the tapered winding check up to the front of the reel seat. I am posting a picture in the gallery, any ideas would be great! Thanks everyone for all the help so far!

I researched the spline and I guess it's not as uncommon as I thought. I figured out the winding check issue, as well. Can I post a picture to this thread or do I need to go to the picture gallery?

Hey everyone! I finally ordered supplies from Mudhole to start building again. I have two questions regarding the CRB Special IM6 5'6" rod kit. The reel seat is a 17mm, not a usual 16mm. I am wanting to replace the foregrip with a tapered rubber winding check, and I ordered 16mm in various ID sizes. The 7mm fits, but it doesn't look right. I have a basic 17mm vinyl winding check that clea

Is that a Daiwa Procaster? That model is a great, solid reel.

Dropped into a Harbor Freight today to look around. I don't know how long the sale is, but they have a 6" digital caliper for $14.99 regulary $29.99! It came with a case, a battery, and an extra battery. I just played with it and am really surprised at the quality. Knowing it's an important tool I thought I would give everyone a heads up!

I will look into the pac bay minimas, I have heard a lot of discussion about them. I should of mentioned this earlier, but I have always used basic vinyl/rubber winding checks. I ended up using two, one on top of each other since there was such a big gap. Out of the four rods I have made as a rod builder, they have worked great but don't look clean. Is there a way to know what ID and OD I nee

I posted a thread about rod dryers awhile back and have had time and research to figure out what my plan is for getting back into this. I think I am going to buy the rod dryer from Mudhole for $40, and then start with their CRB split grip kit. It comes with a $30 reel which is a little kicker. I have two questions about this kit. Is it actually cork or foam cork; and then I would like to not have

Hey everyone! I have a few questions about drying a rod. What is the process of drying by hand? I have seen it mentioned but haven't been able to see an example of the process. Second, does anyone have ano old dryer they would like to sell? Mudhole has their CRB model for $40 but I'm hoping to get out cheaper than that. Or if anyone knows where I can get one for less money that would be

I looked into the microwave guides and I am up for trying them out. I work at Academy and we just got a house brand rod that has the microwave guides on them, pretty cool! I saw them on Jannsnetcraft as a kit for $34, no dimensions or anything so I am kinda cautious on buying them. I might just go with the NGC cause that will still be a huge upgrade from what I had. The rod had starting g

Hey everyone! Been out of rod building for a few years and I am trying to get back into. I have done a lot of research the past week on my down time, and I actually took the guides off a spinning rod without damaging the blank! The rod I took the guides off was the first rod I ever built, so it wasn't my best work. One of the guides was actually popping out due to a loose wrapping job. I built

Alright, I put the guides on the rod with surgical tubing to do the static placement thing, and it went good. When I look at the rod, though, it doesn't look right. With the bottom two guides being spinning guides and the others being fly gudies. the jump from the spinning guides to the fly guides seems like it will dampen my casting distance. the spinning guides have a long arm and the fly guide

I didnt think they made a cranking blank in the SCIII series, i will probably go with it. Oh, and I work at Bass Pro so I get special deals through work. It takes like 6-8 weeks to recieve the product though, so thats a drawback. But still, its worth half off.

i want the next rod i make to be for shallow cranks like a manns 1-, bomber model A's, fat free shads, DT 4, 6, and 10's, and maybe topwaters like a popper, spook, or propbaits. all these im thinking would go good with a 6'6 medium action rod. i got 50% off st croix blanks so im thinking of maybe there SCII 6'6 med action crankbait blank? tell me what yall think! i have also looked at batson blan

Okay well it sounds like i will just go with the fly guides idea and use the 25 16 10 8 7 6 sizes. the titanium guides are really expensive and thats why i was hesitant on buying them. i bought the scII as a kit through mudhole but the guides it came with seem really heavy. i have done some snooping online and know that there are better options, like the fly guides mentioned. Thanks!

i am new to making rods and i dont know what guides are the lightest. i think they are the titanium framed ones right? i want to know what guides and what size of guides i need for a 6'1 light action scII rod. it came as a 6'6 but i cut down 5 inches. im also using a BPS Pro Qualifier 1000 reel for it. the spool on this reel is wider than most 1000 reels. its actually as wide as a 2500 reel.
