I agree with Jim as well. I use 4 rpm and 6 rpm motors for drying. I use much faster speed motors to apply the finish, slow speed to dry it.

Try looking in garage sales and flea markets for some old solid glass rods. Cut them down to the size you need.

The Tiger Eye 7'0" Light one piece spin/cast blank is listed as Slow action, 4-8 lb line, 1/8 to 3/8 oz lures. The Medium Light is listed as Moderate action, and the Medium as Fast. You probably want to step up from the Light to it for Walleye.

Tim, Lighten up...you are probably pulling to hard. When I switch from nylon to metallic I always break the first 2 or 3 until I quit tugging so hard. Same thing happens when I switch back and forth between nylon and silk. I just have a little talk with me and lighten up on the touch a bit.

Very well put , Russ. I have had the same problem with professional fishing guides. I tried for a few months years back to work with the guides, but they want everything free or dirt cheap and they trash the rods something terrible. I suggested they quit using graphite and go to heavy fiberglass or solid steel so they could have a rod that lasted more than 5 days. I also suggested they look

Well, today has not been the best day. To top it off, my wife and I share office and shop space and she saw these all happen.... Rule #1 - Don't touch the new shiny stuff on the wraps. Some days I have to tell myself this one every hour or so throughout the day. Rule #2 - Let the hot glue cool for 10 or 15 seconds before you try to remove the excess. You want to remove it while it is sti

What I know is it works and my clients like it. I got a call yesterday from a client that I built a 10'6" simple spiral rod for last year. He has landed 45+ salmon on the rod this season and says it always draws a crowd of interested fishermen when he is out on the water. This guy is one of my better clients for generating new sales.

Allcock was busy making split cane rods as early as the 1870s and exporting a lot of their rods to Canada. This one sounds like one of their salmon rods. Not real valuable, depending on condition could be up to $150, but a good quality rod.

Most use a 10' to 12 ' rod up here. Any of the quality blank options will work just fine. I usually build them as sprial wrapped casting rods. Some clients prefer spinning rods so it's pretty much what your client prefers. I can look up some of the blanks I have used with success if you want specific data. Angler's Workshop or Utmost Enterprises are two of the local regional sponsors that

David, I like your site and hope you do well on retirement. My only comment is that for older guys like me, the color choices make it difficult to read. Darker backgrounds and mulitcolored text tend to make it harder to distinguish the text from the background for me. The colors look nice, but are just too hard to read. Joe

Ted, for that tiny sliver see if your friend has some nail polish that mayches the blank. All you are trying to do is hide the "gray" ring anyway and a tiny dab of nail polish will do that without detracting from the rod..

Jerry, I sell CND spey blanks in that length. They are not overly heavy. They are also not cheap. Email or call me if interested. They are not in my online catalog yet. Joe

Dave, The new Priority Mail at USPS does now include a tracking system from origin to final destination world wide. It is much improved over the older Priority service.

Dave, Last time I shipped to Australia I believe the US Post Office was least expensive. There were length restrictions of 42 inches if I recall correctly. With the new rate increases who knows. However, the new USPS Priority Mail is global and has some much more favorable length restrictions than the old options. I would check all the options and even ask your client if there is a prefe

Of course, I sell them (the Tiger Eye blanks) but I also build on them. The fishing around here is largely trout and smallmouth bass plus the annual steelhead runs. These blanks make very nice smallmouth rods.

I've given up on UPS...about 80% breakage. Jim, I think they use the long tubes as levers to fix flat tires on the trucks. Fedex and DHL don't even know where the town I'm close to is located. I have very good luck with USPS...but, I do watch the length closely. And I do not like the rate increases. Some of my smaller First Class packages have doubled in price while some of my proirity

I wonder if it would make the fish you catch have a high, squeaky voice? Might make a good float rod?

It is also not uncommon for there to be enough variance in tip size plus paint or top coating to allow you go up or down a half size.

I cut and use thin pieces of masking tape. I also roll up a strip of masking tape with the sticky side out to about 3/16 inch diameter cylinder. I use the sticky tape cylinder by jamming it behind the guide foot on the blank to help hold the guide upright as I start the wrap. One of these cylinders will remain useful for a couple of rods. Use the blue painters tape to avoid leaving sticky re

I've used the Gold HT Electra as the main wrap with two single threads of Red metallic imbeded and Green metallic trim bands. I put this on a light purple blank. This combination catches and matches most of the colors in the holographic guides. Blue metallic would also look good as trim or highlight wraps. Out in the sunshine these metallic threads really add soemthing to the holographic

I've used the water based Urethanes from Valspar before with good results. It does take several coats...but it also dries pretty quickly and allows recoating sooner. I typically use High Build epoxies, but the other stuff does work. As mentioned above, it is a pretty good CP agent and can be used to inlay feathers as well.

Actually, the spey rod guys around here tend to like longer grips; thinner diameter (about 0.940); and flares for thumb rest at the top of the fore grip and finger grip at the bottom of the rear grip. I have also turned a palm rest in the fore grip just below the thumb rest for comfort.. The fore grip from the reel seat up to the palm rest is pretty straight so the hand can slide up and down e
