Played with making some carbon grips, but the material I have has sat for long enough the fold creases in the side don't seem to want to work out no matter how hard I try. Any tips?
Thanks.

I've found some of the smaller reels will fit better with the American Tackle seats you mention than the Large sized Fuji's. I don't imagine there is a huge difference in strength. Normally I prefer Fuji over all others, but I've the DPSH seats are one seat that I've just not been thrilled with. The variety of colors available with American Tackle makes them a nice option as well.

"I had a problem like that once. Was in a hurry and my TM light only had 12 hours of cure. The Micro Set ate through the finish. "
I did the same exact thing once- with the same exact result.

I was hesitant to post as I didn't want to seem like trying to get something for nothing but glad I did now. I always look forward to seeing what's left over from the show anyway. You do have an order from me, any issues please let me know.

Me, for sure. I always have these great things I want to try, but when finished they never seem to quite turn out just as I'd like. Can be as simple as putting a reel seat on a rod, somehow will end up a bit off center. Or I'll have one fall out of a dryer. or epoxy will fisheye between coats.. or something. Very hard to get a finished product to turn out just like I'd want it to.

126. After show specials?
One thing I didn't notice any of this year was "After show specials" from any of the sponsors. Since I've been unable to attend, I though this was pretty cool.
Was this just a one time thing or did I miss them?

Kencor has some VERY soft fiberglas blanks. I have one I'm building now... most of them are a bit shorter than 6 foot though.

Wow, much bigger group of replies than I expected, especially with people being busy getting ready for the show. Tim- Supply not much of a help as hazmat requires a lot of paperwork and special storage anymore for the Navy. Bob- The only other builder I know of that frequents this site from Japan is Hiro, both me and my wife have E-mail him in the past but not received any responses.

As many of you know, I'm in the military stationed in Japan. I am having the hardest time ordering some of the items I need because no one wants to ship outside the U.S.
Right now I'm trying to order:
West Systems 207 epoxy/105 Hardener
Helmsman Spar Urethane spray cans
Expanding Foam for handles in either 6 or 8lb
Petit Easypoxy paint for my boat
I've tried every website from Ace Hardw

Similar in size to a Penn 320 GTi, maybe just a bit larger than a Penn International 975 if you are familiar with those. I'm not home so can't give you the measurements you are looking for.

133. Re: TM 5 minute gel
I've had to remove a couple tips with the TM5 and a little heat is all it takes. Sometimes they come of so easy that I find myself wondering if I didn't actually put it on with the heat glue.

134. Carbon grip help
As with anything else that's new that I try to do, there's a bit of a learning curve. I tried to make my first carbon grip the other day. Pre-bored foam not here yet, so built of a pre-formed cork grip.
- First mistake: Failed to take into account that the grip would get bigger. Grip was designed to fit the inside a casting reel seat, after coating and epoxy just ended up with a funky shaped g

Mudhole- I think you need not worry too much. You've proven your usefullness and reliability over several years and have nothing to prove. If I weren't stationed back in Japan now I'd still be making the monthly drive from Tampa to Orlando to flex blanks and stock up.

138. Re: Bad Shikaris?
No, I didn't buy them from Mudhole or a sponsor that was booted. I'm also not trying to blast anyone, just trying to figure out what I actually bought. When I bought them I was told they weren't blems or seconds, but did get them for a good price, probably $20-25 a blank. Steve- sounds like you and I may have got ours from the same place. I don't understand though, if Shikari never sold blanks th

I have a sturgeon rod to build for my Mom. Would like to put a tiger wrap on it but but not sure what colors would work out when a football teams colors are black and silver? I plan on building the rod with black/silver Sulky trimmed with black and silver trim bands. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Phil

141. Bad Shikaris?
As I'm not home often enough to build a lot of rods, I just got around to building some Shikari Closeout blanks I ordered from one of the Sponsors of this fine board. They were sold as close-outs, not blems or seconds.
In my infinite wisdom, I built on spine and never really checked to see how straight the blanks were. The blanks are unfinished for the most part. One of the blanks I just fini

Sorry but I don't see the point of trying to come up with home made concoctions for Color Preserver. It's not exactly expensive, figure at the most 50 cents worth on a rod (that's stretching it), and the Swifty CP for me has been about as easy to put on as I can ask for. I used to have a hard time with the 311 as it would thicken, I'd screw with it too long, etc, but the swifty is pretty easy to

Mine hasn't made it to Japan yet either and it's killing me. If someone doesn't mind shooting me an E-mail with a shopping list of what to buy that'd be awesome, then I could have the stuff here when the Rodmaker finally shows up. I went to the uscomposites and solar websites but couldn't quite figure out exactly what I need to pick up. I have duty today so not much else to do on except surf the

You guys are great. I don't know that I've ever done anything so kind. Kinda makes you think sometimes..... The last time I was home a good friend I hadn't seen in years presented me and my wife Hitomi with two beautifully wrapped striper rods with our names inscribed on them using his own special technique. It was definitely one of the nicest gestures anyone's ever done for me.

So it may be because of the different types of threads? Makes sense thinking about it as the Sulky metallic was the thinnest thread compared to Gudebrod and Madeira. I'll have to see if I can prevent it from happening again.
I truly despise working with Gudebrod metallics after seeing how much easier it is to work with Sulky or some of the other metallics. I haven't done a lot of metallic butt

Good info. I think your cause would be helped if the products were packaged with this info. I just received another bottle of Swifty CP and it still includes the Rod Finish instructions which state to use a light to heat up the wraps. This messed me up and kept me from using Swifty CP when I very first got it some time ago as I didn't realize the instructions were for rod finish, not CP. I then n

Sounds like this is a common problem, not one I've seen before. I don't understand why only the metallic loosened up.
Is Sulky particularly prone to this or does it happen with all metallics?

Now I'm back home, was trying to finish up a rod for my bro-in-law in CA. Everything was fine, wrapped the butt wrap with medium tension, simple chevron (gold Sulky, Purple gudebrode, green Madera). Everything was fine until I put Swifty CP on. The gold sulky instantly loosened up, leaving it loose in between every chevron. Attempts to pull the threads together were unsuccessful.

I would second Decal Connection, can't see there being any sort of issue with using the graphic.
With the Navy Senior Chief anchor, are you looking for the rating badge or the anchor? If your looking for the anchor should be fairly easy to create, as it is all gold with silver lettering and star. If you need help finding the graphics, shoot me an E-mail to itc@dd
