I went through all of that too. I tried leveling and futsing with it until I got bored. About 10 minutes since my attention span goes to nil when I am not having fun. I finally took a very small bungee cord, padded its hooks with tape, and streached it from the reel seat hood to the chuck. It works great except it does throw everything off balance at VERY high speeds. Good thing I can't cont

I just tried applying TM at high speed. (overwraps only) It came out beautifully. The edges are sharp and straight too. still dried as 11rpm.

OH NO! I have raised a couple of teenagers! Are we talking about getting one's room dust free? It can't be done! Just don't move the mountain of dirty clothes...or the mountain of clean clothes..It may keep the dust encapsulated.

Thank you Raymond for your quick response. I was afraid of that answer, but afraid to bend the feet without asking. Your trim band tutorial has been a real boost to my work also. I'll post a pic in the guide photos when I am done. I guess I should ask another question while I am at it.. About half way up the foot on these guides, the wire Ys out for a way before turning up to form the t

I am afraid to ask the experts because I am almost done, but something about my guide feet is bothering me. I ground them nicely so that the thread walked right up the feet without a hitch. The problem is that the bottoms of the feet do not lie flat against the underwraps. The feet angle down from the towers until just the tips hit and by the time I wrap up and tie off, there is at least a cm

Thanks Matt for the test results, and Billy and Fred for the advice. Yes, I have been burnishing the whole thing to flatten and keep what's under from peaking through. And yes while working from inside to out, the trim wraps have come loose. I am slow and careful at wrapping them and lose a good 15 minutes work when that happens plus the wraps I cut off because they didn't come out close enoug

Another dumb question.... Do you burnish wraps if they are already tight? I have upset a couple of trim bands while burnishing and had to re-do the wraps... Of course it could be technique... Thanks for your answers.

I pop the drive belt off, or I turn by the tip top....probably not the best idea, but I check the alignment of everything when done. Guess I should add here that I can see that twisting on the tip is a bad Idea.....

I have the Pac Bay. Being a hobby builder, I don't need to have many options or specialty equiptment. I work on one rod at a time. I use the power wrapper for holding my rods while wrapping, but usually turn them by hand. I sometimes use the power for long runs between trim bands. I find it invaluable for drying rods and have used it to turn the handles on a couple rods. Kind of a one tool doe

It took about a week to get the CD of volume 4. Tom is awesome about getting things out quickly. When I subscribed, I also got the previous issue almost immediately (within 5-7 work days). I agree with Charlie. "worth waiting on."

That Is Beautiful! I like the forgrip detail too. How did you match the colors so well, and what is it made of? I used a pink Mudhole blank to build a saltwater boat rod for my sister. (one of the special purchace blanks of undisclosed origin) She is a half-day boat skipper. It is a fun rod and gets fished almost every day by people with varied experience. She loves it, but we are both

I am working on the guide placement on a seeker 670-8. I have a few size 10, 2 siize 12, and one of each size up to 24 Pac Bay boat guides. A read all the info in the library about static guide placement and have searched this forum, but still have a question about the size and placement of the butt guide. Tom’s article says I should have an idea where my butt guide goes already, butt I don't

Mo, In a perfect world. some combination of yellow, magenta, and cyan (sp chk billy?) would match any color, but that doesn't work with paints. Paint mixers have dozens of tints and different bases they work with. I would take the blank to a paint store or Home Depot and ask the nicest person working to scan it with their computer eye. Write down the formula and then beg for a couple of drop

Thank You for your info. This place is wonderful! It is unbelievable to me that anyone can get their questions answered by the who's who of the craft by simply asking. If all goes as planned in my world and I can swing the ICRBE I hope to thank you all in person Bill

I am having trouble melding all of the information I am getting regarding the handle on my jig stick. I seems to be customary here (So Cal) to wrap the blank with cork tape and clamp the reel to that at the desired spot. My first wondering is why not use a reel seat? Also after reading Tom's ergonomics article several times, I have come to the conclusion that my handle, wrapped with cork tape

I did one for my sister also. She skippers a 1/2 day boat and the rod lives in the outdoor holder just outside the wheelhouse. I went out fishing with her the other day and noticed that where the black, pink, and grey threads are still vivid, the blank has faded from hot pink to a dull pinkish peach.....only 1 month old.. I know most rods don't live in the sun, but I was still sad to see it so

OK.. I have some Diamondite sitting here, but I already used FCCP on my buttwrap. I was feeling confident with flexcoat, but after reading this thread I might try the Diamondite, Back to a piece of Marc's original ? Has anyone ever put Diamondite over Flexcoat CP?

Much better to build rod holders to accomodate rods. Mine are straight behind the seat (pvc). Tall enough to keep reels dry in small surf and chop, and as out my way as possible like a quiver. I have heard of guys who's butt caps didn't fit into rod holders. I have been experimenting with moving the reel up and down to find what is the most comfortable and efficient rear grip length fo

Steven, I have been pondering rods for this application also. Though I fish inshore, there are a few things we both need to think about. Kayakers are notorious highstickers! Mostly because we are sitting on the water and there is little room for the tip of the rod between shoulder level and the water, but probably out of some carelessness as well. I also see lots of bent tips straight up i

I have a small bungee cord that I use. I streaches nicely from the hood of the reel seat to the chuck and just stays put by setting the hook on the back of the chuck. Solved the problem for me!

Thank you Tho and Jon. In San Diego, The holy grail of local fish for kayakers are yellowtail and White Sea Bass. Of course we have some nice flatties also. I am thinking that I framed my question wrongly. I got no response after a week from a kayak fishing board. Since I am no longer looking ar rods as a blind consumer "hey mister...can you sell me a jig stick?", but rathe

I do most of my fishing in the ocean off of a kayak. I want to build a Jig stick specifically for kayak fishing and am not sure where to start. I usually use a 7' boat rod because 8' on a kayak is too much for me. I am thinking that 7'6" would be ideal. The jigs I like best are TADY 45s (4.5 oz) and Salis 6Xs (7 oz). Has anyone built a rod for this application or do you have any su

Mo As Erik stated, the vapor cartridges are usually black. (by the way...paints don't release fumes... Vapors are the result of eVAPORation... I had that drilled into me as an apprentice LOL.) I still think the easiest thing to do is to visit a paint store depending on where you live. In San Diego, there is a Sherwin Williams, Dunn-EDWARDS, Home Depot, or Frazee in every neighborhood corne

When I was a painting contractor, I had reason to wear those things frequently. I have to say that the Survivair worked the best and was the most comfortable. The cartridges are rather pricey and will go about the business of purifying the neighborhood while you are not wearing your mask, thus ending their effectiveness, so it is a good idea to remove them from the mask and seal them into Ziplo

I am sick! Can't stop spending my money building rods I don't need, however since I am elbow deep into another one I have a question. I am building a boat rod for my sister and want to wrap the guides near the tip on using size A thread over size A underwraps. Near the butt I want to do the same using size C. I had read that people go up one size from the underwrap to keep threads from push

Would a sewing machine motor work? Kinda high rpm, but that could be dealt with. Of course you could also go from zero to 10" wraps in .3 seconds.
