Hi Phil- here's how I've done it........ I cut a slit in the foam brush (on the same axis as the handle), soak the lower half of the sponge with Perma Gloss (enough to make it pretty wet), then insert the blank into the slit and make about three QUICK one-way passes down the blank (butt to tip, butt to tip, butt to tip) while rotating the blank (blank in left hand, brush in right hand, vice vers

Hi Mike- go up to the Search button and type in color or paint . You'll get many threads, some of which refer to changing blank color, painting blanks, etc. There was a good discussion here just a few days ago (check a few pages back). There are several popular methods in use but the bottom line is TEST ON A PIECE OF SCRAP BLANK FIRST !!! Some of the overcoats have a nasty hab

Fred- the surf rod I just overhauled (2 pictures are posted "Scott's Surf Rod") is now in its 3rd generation of use in the same family. When Scott delivered it to me, I had to overlook the fact that the very corroded chromed guides were held onto the blank with red electrical tape. Deep down, I could see that this old rod carried lots of family memories with it. This being the secon

I just purchased (actually it was a birthday present from wife & son) a Dazor Model 2324 task light (see www.dazor.com) and it is great . This is a table-top model with a 10 lb base (they also make a clamp-on model). It has a jointed extendable arm and there are nearly an infinite number of positions this light will assume. It is so well balanced that moving the lamp around is by fingertip

Here in eastern NC, the midges and mosquitoes have emerged. Two nights ago, I left a rod turning after epoxying the guide wraps. I also left my flourescent work light on...right over the rod. About an hour later, I checked my epoxy and discovered a perfectly inlaid mosquito in one of the guide wraps. Thank goodness for the extended pot life of the epoxy. I removed the creature with tweezers,

Henry- Tom is right. Use size C NCP white and pack the threads very tightly. I'm just finishing up a refurbishing job on an old surf rod....the blank is brown and I used NCP white as underwraps and it looks pretty good. I'll try to post a picture or 2 in a few days. I did wear down my thumbnails with this project because I knew the brown would show through the white thread if I was slack on

I built a rod last year - green blank - used Gudebrod dark brown guide wraps with metallic copper trim wraps - looks pretty snazzy. Pete Kornegay

For what it's worth, I'm rebuilding a surf rod that is chocolate brown and using white NCP thread as the underwraps....a very unforgiving situation. My LS Supreme hardener is also very amber colored. I put 2 coats of LS Supreme on the butt wrap yesterday and today, took the rod out into the bright sunshine for an inspection. The epoxy coating over the white threadwork is just as clear as gin.

There are probably other pigments better than those found in Testors paint but that's what I had available at the time. If you use something like Testors paint, let the pigment settle for several days, pour off the solvent and then dip out what you need for mixing with a toothpick. Many other folks on the board have had success with TAP pigments and Perm-Gloss. In Charlotte, Ken Preston demons

While in Charlotte, Tom Kirkman mentioned to me that he’d had good results with sponge brushes (Lowes, Home Depot, Ace Hardware, etc.) when applying Perma-Gloss to rod blanks. I just tried it and it works like a charm. I’m refurbishing a surf rod for a friend and the outer layer (brown) was badly chipped down to the glass in places. I tinted the Perma-Gloss with brown pigment from Testors

Dave- get your hands on a copy of RodMaker Magazine, Volume 6, Issue #1. There's a great article with photos on narrow trim bands and thread inlays. Check with Tom Kirkman on ordering back issues Of RodMaker. Pete Kornegay

Andy- while Emily was writing up my sales ticket, I happened to mention something to her about how my wife would get even with me. (She calls it retaliatory spending). Emily replied with...."Oh...Andy doesn't even realize the shopping I'm going to do after this weekend." Dude....quick.....hide the credit cards. Pete K.

The blanks, the guides, the thread, etc. were interesting and much to my wife’s dismay; I brought home a bunch of stuff. But the people are what really made “The Show”. For those of you who couldn’t attend, here are a few thumbnail sketches of some of the people I met: Putter- didn’t look anything like I thought he would. I had him pictured as a silver-haired grampa type. Wrong.

Greg- I first measure the tip of the blank with a tip sizer, then order a tip-top with that size tube, one just above that size and one just below. Example: the tip measures 5.0, then I order a 5.0, a 4.5, and a 5.5. With all three in hand, you can then select the best fit. Yep- you'll end up with 2 tip-tops you don't need at the moment but more than likely, you'll need them eventually.

Last year, someone posted a great idea that I use. Drill a small hole in the cap of each bottle; the hole should be just big enough to accept and grip the tip end of the syringe. Then, when you want to measure resin or hardener, just tip the bottle up and withdraw the appropriate measure with the syringe. You have to pull back on the syringe plunger very slowly to prevent air bubbles from bein

......and then, if you absolutely, positively need to sling lead with a surf rod, there's always that big pond down the road called Lake Norman!
