For those of you who use orthodontic rubber bands to hold guides in place, I recently dealt with Thompson Orthodontics in Prospect, KY with good results. Phone number is 1-800-251-3437 and their web site is www.thompsonorthodontics.com I spoke to John Thompson about ordering 1/4 inch rubber bands- he said a sizeable part of their rubber band sales are to crafts people. The only problem was

Larry- you're right but be very, very careful though. A scalpel will cut you so easily that you won't even know it until you see blood- they are unforgiving. I speak from personal experience. A hunting buddy who is also a taxidermist turned me on to skinning deer with a scalpel several years ago and I've had several unintended lacerations. Of course, I can be pretty dangerous with a dull spo

Putter- yep, it went from.....like..... Gudebrod Scarlet, through Garnet, and just about to Purple in about 6 hours. Another 6 hours and something would have been marbelized. This was another one of my famous "Hey, if you'll pay for the components, I'll build the rod for you free to improve my techniques." type of projects. Pete K.

Mishap? Mishap?? Well, now that you mentioned it.......................Here's the chain of events for my latest- Saturday night- I'm trimming a strip of that yellow plastic drywall mesh to make a shim for a butt cap when one of the tag ends of the mesh pokes me really good under a fingernail. Knowing that the next day is Sunday, I swear, "Gosh darn it, that hurt." Sunday- All

Doug- depending on the inside diameter, these rings may be useful for surf rod builders. If you don't have a use for them, post them on the Buy/Sell page and I'll bet someone will take them off your hands. Pete Kornegay Camden, NC

Thanks for a great tool, Dave- as an example of how I use it, my boss wanted me to build his wife a flounder rod (he lives far away). For thread color choices, I referred him to the site, she tried out her very own color combinations (feminine, I might add), they e-mailed me the "final decision" web page link and we were off and running. Ain't the internet wondeful ??? Pete Korn

Hi guys- this link is still available............. You can try all sorts of combinations and save your final decision as a web page link to which you can return or refer friends. I don't remember who keeps this color combination site going but I really appreciate it and use it often. Pete Kornegay

Thanks guys! I didn't think it made any difference as to which hand was used in casting but needed to hear it from someone experienced. Pete K.

Greetings- I'm planning a casting rod for a friend who is left handed. Would there be advantages to a counter-clockwise spiral or does it matter at all? Thanks for any advice. Pete Kornegay Camden, NC

Thanks Eric, Tim, Jesse, Dan, & Terry for the advice!! Tim- A Hokie is a neutered turkey?? ....................not a very noble mascot. Several work associates are Va. Tech. alumns and one of the guys is having me build this rod to torture the others. They must put something in the water there. Pete Kornegay

If you're reading this, you are probably a Hoakie or know someone who is a Hoakie. Actually, I've never quite figured out the meaning of the term "Hoakie" but I digress. Anyway- I have a request for a rod with Virginia Tech thread colors - maroon and orange. Looking through my thread collection, I have a spool of Gudebrod garnet (looks maroon to me). I also see that Gudebrod ma

My advice is to move out of Dennis' path. We sat through Isabel (2003) here in NE NC and it wasn't any fun. Lots of Florida folks on this board got hammered last year.

Scott- When I said "Repeat", what I meant was to put a third coat of spray paint on the blank. After allowing the spray paint to dry for a few days and then applying a coat of Perma Gloss, the Perma Gloss did not take up or react with the Dupli Color spray paint at all. Perma Gloss is so tough, that I'll likely only use one coat when I paint an entire blank. Keep in mind that i

Hi Scott- I've experimented with a couple of paints and top-coats with varying degrees of success but as of yesterday, the combination most successful for me is the spray-type auto touch up paint with a coat of Perma Gloss a few days later. I used Dupli Color (purchased at Auto Zone) auto spray paint. Bill Boettcher and others have used Plasti Kote with success. Step by step- here's what I

Hi Bill- I like the Rainshadow: SW967 Trns.Blk / M Clear 8'0" 1 15-25lb. 3/4-4oz. 0.680 7.5 Mod-Fast Med-Hvy 5.42oz. $50.00 *SW967F Trns.Blk / M Clear 8'0" 2 15-25lb. 3/4-4oz. 0.645 7.0 Mod-Fast Med-Hvy 5.65oz. $55.00 The SW967F is a 2 piece... new in Batson's lineup for 2005. I spiral wrapped a SW 967 last year and it is a sweet trolling rod. Pete Kornegay Camden, NC

On about half the rods I've built to date, I've used EVA grips. I just like the feel of EVA on some of the bigger rods I use for trolling and casting to schools of fish on top. Does anyone have firsthand knowledge of how long EVA grips last? Do they eventually lose the slightly cushioned feel? Thanks. Pete Kornegay

David- denatured alcohol is ethanol (the drinking variety) to which a substance has been added that would make you regret trying to drink it. It is an outstanding solvent. It is also very flammable. Rubbing alcohol is isopropyl alcohol. In my opinion it is not as good of a solvent as ethanol but is a little less flammable. When you buy ethanol at the harware store, there's a metal seal in t

Don- there are several key factors that influence striped bass C&R mortality rates. They include water temperature, hooking location, fight time, handling by the angler, and salinity. In our studies on the Roanoke River, NC, C&R mortality rates were 6.2% at water temperatures below 72 degrees. Once water temperatures exceeded 72 degrees, mortality rates skyrocketed. Striped bass are,

Thanks for the tip, Andrew. My son's braces cost only $5,000 and not only does he have nice straight teeth but I've got lots of bags of 1/4" orthodontic rubber bands left over. What a bargain! These bands are outstanding for use in temporary guide placement and testing. Pete Kornegay

I use a 6 inch transparent clear office ruler that I purchased at Office Max (don't use a transparent colored ruler, the color interferes with finding the end of the wrap). I actually use the metric side of the ruler- the millimeters are perfect for obtaining small increment measurements frequently needed on wraps. Pete Kornegay

Tom & I were apparently responding at the same time. He recommends one pass and I suggested three passes using the slit-brush method. The reason I started with the slit method is because I was refinishing a surf rod with a large diameter butt. Pete K.
