Cedar works fine. Here's a piece I use for the 'rub collar' on my Cannon rigger's rod holder. This came from central Ontario. Glasscoat for the finish..it's holding up better than expected. as a side note..I believe I was told that utility poles are cedar...if you find where they're replacing them,the old ones usually lay there a while-----chainsaw a hunk off. I use EVA almost every time ( I like working with contact cement in confined areas :>} ), BUT , I put a WOODEN 'rub collar' in the grip where it will ride against the rod holder. Trolling for late summer Kings on Lake Ontario puts a pretty good strain on the rod/holders ( Canon riggers,in this case), but the wood helps a ton. I usually use it for my personal 'beater' rods..I' haven't had one fail..yet...but, I'm in freshwater & Great Lakes trolling, & long ( surf blank) muskie rods are about as stressful as mine get. I'd likely not use it for the 'real fish' ...
