Cedar works fine. Here's a piece I use for the 'rub collar' on my Cannon rigger's rod holder. This came from central Ontario. Glasscoat for the finish..it's holding up better than expected.
as a side note..I believe I was told that utility poles are cedar...if you find where they're replacing them, the old ones usually lay there a while-----chainsaw a hunk off. Probably only the inner core

I always figured his skin would peel off by the time he was 60,but ,he looks great.
Personally,I'm addicted to the fumes of...5 min. epoxy(my favorite), MEK is good, I LOVE the smell of crystal coat, I like the smell of LS supreme-I mix it & let it harden in the cup just to put me in the rodbuilding mood-never cared for it as a finish.
But then, being in the bowling business,I'm used to

On the other side of the coin...
back in the early 70's ( I was still in high school) ,I worked in a rod plant for 4 years( pultrusion molding-solid glass rods). the boss would literally wash his hands & arms in a pail of acetone ! Phil had done it for 10 years before I got there-it was just the way he did it-after setting up the molds & ovens,or changing the resin in the vats, we'd be

I've done it a few times...4 full passes will do it (+1 configuration). If you're patient, you can move those threads out to make room for more passes.Just be careful you don't snag & rip up the threads when moving them..

Gudebrod's old & retired "Hard & Fast" was another that barely ambered & held thread colors very well.Went on nice ,too. Not a hi-build finish..but not real thin ,either.

I have changed my technique...after I put part "A"of the finish into the mixing cup, I put that bottle a long ARM"S LENGTH away when I set it down so I don't accidently pick that bottle up again.....

I use EVA almost every time ( I like working with contact cement in confined areas :>} ), BUT , I put a WOODEN 'rub collar' in the grip where it will ride against the rod holder. Trolling for late summer Kings on Lake Ontario puts a pretty good strain on the rod/holders ( Canon riggers,in this case), but the wood helps a ton. SO,the rear grip needs to be fitted to the angler, plus, the rod hol

I usually use it for my personal 'beater' rods..I' haven't had one fail..yet...but, I'm in freshwater & Great Lakes trolling, & long ( surf blank) muskie rods are about as stressful as mine get. I'd likely not use it for the 'real fish' ...
