Another vote for the Flexcoat Arbor. I used a rat tail file to ream out the arbor. Very easy to work with. Try it yand you'll never go back. Bill Giokas

Broke my T&T Horizon on a Bluefish and I think that maybe the ferrule was loose. So, check your rod now and then and avoid the painful experience. Or, maybe I tried to horse in the fish too fast and put too much pressure on the rod. Bill Giokas

What is the proper measurement for the placement of a reel seat on a Spey rod? I'm going to build one this coming Winter and wondered if there is a measurement to place the reel seat? Bill

Thinking of making a spey rod and to me the handle looks like the most difficult part of the project. I don't turn my own handles and use pre-formed grips. Has anyone had success building a spey rod with pre-formed grips? What brand of pre-formed grip did you use? Thanks Bill

I use them on my saltwater rods and like them very much. The only concern I have is that they might cause some brands of fly lines to peel off the coating. This has happened to me with my Airflo Depth Charge line. I think it's more a fault of the line than the guides. Bill

I just might build a spey or perhaps a switch rod and the only difference I can see ,from a single handed rod is the handle configuration. Are there any measurements out there for placing the reel seat in the right place on the blank? I would probably get a pre-formed grip which would help solve this question. Bill

I wondering if the recoil snake guides cause the coating on fly lines to come off. The snake guides are thin and rather sharp. I've had the coating of my Airflo Depth Charge line come off and wonder if the Recoil guides could have caused the problem. Bill

I may have to redo a couple of snake guides and there are a little out of alignment. I've stripped off a few in the past but I noticed that there is a little pocket of epoxy surrounding the area where the snake guide sat. So here is the question, how do you remove this pocket without damaging the blank? I tried a razor knife but it sometimes takes off the outer coating of the blank. Thanks in a

T&T recommends a dark green for their Horizon which I just built and used . Thread color is a personal choice. What every you think will look good to you it's your rod. Bill

The TFO rep told me that 90% for flyrod failure is do to loose ferrules. This would be difficult to prove. Bill

The directions to Devcon 2 ton epoxy says to roughen up the surface before applying. In the past I have not but I wonder if a light sanding of the blank might help with the adhesion of the epoxy. Thank Bill

It seems that Fluro grade cork grips and rings are getting more difficult to find. I guess the supply of quality cork has not kept up with the demand. I have noticed that some of the major rod manufactures cork grips are not what they used to be. Anyone have a source for fluro cork rings? Bill

Maybe for my next rod I'll give one of the Trondak U-40 products a try. I like the Flex Coat lite but it can be troublesome to work with. Anyone had good success with the Trondak U-40 products? Bill

For me the most difficult wrap is the tip top to the blank. It's at the end of the rod section and very fragile. I wrap over the tip top for added insurance that it won't fall off . Do you just wrap up to the tip top and not over it? Bill

I use the cheap brushes that come with the Flex Coat kit and they don't seem to do a good job. I'm thinking of getting a better brush and use epoxy cleaner . Bill

I purchased a Struble cork grip but the REC hood could not fit in the inlet ring on the grip. I cut off the small ring and got the proper cork ring from REC. So now I have the problem of blending the REC ring to the grip. It looks like I'll need to get another cork ring to make it work. So , should I get it a try or simply buy a REC grip that will fit the ring? Thanks Bill . This is what I l

111. Decals
Both my Winston and T&T rods included decals with the blank. So, I might just put one on my latest blank. I think it's a peel and stick type of decal. So, should I put it on the blank and then apply the finish over it or put the finish on the decal before I apply it to the blank?

How long do you leave your wraps on the rod before you finish them with the final epoxy finish? My concern is that the thread might loosen a bit before I finish the rod. What I do is wrap all the sections and then finish them off. It might be a couple of weeks before the wraps see the final finish. Bill Giokas

Anyone happened to know what size Urethane shim the REC USA reel seat will take? This reel seat is discontinued by REC but Cabela's is still selling them. Thanks Bill

Fish the saltwater all the time with cork grip flyrods. Cork has a much warmer feeling to it and does not slip easily as other materials. I suspect and it was mentioned the EVA is cheaper. The problem for the rod builder today is to find quality cork pre-formed grips it you don't turn your own. Bill

How is the quality of the Struble cork grips.? I've used REC in the past but what they called there select grade was pretty poor. I don't have a lathe so I have to buy pre-formed grips. I also want this to fit a REC USA reel seat which Cabala's has on sale for a pretty good price. Thanks Bill

I fish Salt water on Cape Cod with a T&T Horizon II rod that I built with recoil snake guides. No problem at all with grooving. However , I'm not using Recoil Stripping guides. I use PacBay Titanium coated guides with Sic rings . I've had the stainless steel tip top groove because of the sand ect. and also swtiched to Titanium tops with no problem. Bill

Has anyone used this stuff. A custom rod building house up here in MA has switched for Flexcoat to AFTCOTE. What are the advantages of this if any over Flexcoat. Bill.
