take a look at the dan craft FTL in the 8 foot 3 wt 6 piece configuration. works great as a pack rod and felt wonderful when i fished it. it quickly became my favorite rod for dry flies on my sierra streams. i used a struble D27 reel seat with single foot wire guides and i used a DT4F line on it.

It appears Internet Explorer 8 is a Windows-only app. as Ron has surmised, the problem is Windows'/Microsoft compatibility with non-Windows machines and web browsers. His reply suggested he'll work on the compatibility issue and calls for patience. I'm glad he'll work on this. It's no longer a Windows-only world. I hope others posting web content will realize this as well.

do you usually use the same brand of guide? maybe a different brand would fall in line with what you would like, assuming prepping the underside doesn't work as well.

bill, did you search google and find a link for lefty kreh signature series blanks for sale? that would surprise me.
temple fork outfitters is not a sponsor of this site so continued discussion about their blanks is probably against the rules here. not because they are bad at all, just other sponsors offer blanks just as good if not better than TFO. and i think i've heard tom say he would like

the 2-piece lefty kreh signature series is not offered as a blank-only option according to their web site.

i agree, i've always believed REC supplied them. if not, they sure are a very close match.

you write that the rod is no longer under warranty. are those your words or his? did anyone contact orvis directly with a phone call? i understand the length of years might be an issue but the company itself may be able to help in another way. if not i would suggest that first.

i've fished the TiCR-X in a sinking 8 wt for stripers in stillwater from a tube and really liked the rod. it was a borrowed rod and i have plans someday to wrap my own on that blank.

i wrap about 1.5 times the diameter of the blank and it looks good to me. 2x seems too long (to me). try the shorter length first and if it looks too short to you, wrap more.

years ago a 9 foot 6wt rod was considered and often recommended as the de facto standard or best choice for a first fly rod. if he's just getting into this and has read older articles or is getting suggestions from someone who started long ago, your customer could be working with this idea. these days, a 9 foot 5wt is considered the standard and in my parts for where i fish, a "standard"

for many fly types myself included, the look is equally important. notice i said equally. and that is very subjective.
i like the D27 from struble in rosewood for my 3 and 4 wt rods.

i had a 6 piece FTL, 8 foot, 3wt. LOVED the rod. dan craft talked me into the 6 piece when i was considering the 5. said slight edge in breakdown size, nothing else different. this was for a week-long backpacking trip in the sierra. worked GREAT for the few times i fished it on that trip, continued wonderful performance afterwards until it was stolen. i used a struble downlocking D27 seat, single

everyone has supplied good tips including making sure the blank is level, work a bit faster and use less finish. but the most important clarification i can add is to victor's reply... don't use a "good" credit card. just one of those free versions companies send out in the mail to reel you in. lol

george's linked photo of a tiger eye fly rod doesn't do the tiger eye blank's color justice (no offense meant george). they are a beautiful medium golden brown with orange overtures which really shines in full sunlight.

i don't bother with cork sealer so in case you're under the impression it's necessary, it's not. i do use soft scrub cleanser and a sponge once a year or so.

very cool and informative videos in the instructional section. i checked out the building a preshaped cork handle and the writing on a blank videos. nice tips for writing and interesting to me to see how the pilot drill bits are designed to be used. but using a bicycle catalog for mixing 5 minute epoxy? what a shame! lol

check out the pacific bay Channel Lock fly seats (CL7). all aluminum. i've used a couple in the titanium color on 7 and 8wt bass rods, work and look great (thought i have little experience), price is good, better than my buddy's comparable struble seat. and fighting butts available to boot. i like the F2M.

joe... i have a web site bookmarked here at home which offers parts for fly rod reel seats made of nickel silver. they need to be buffed and polished but parts are sold by the piece and butt caps in several classic styles are available with schematics for sizes. you could probably match what you need from a sponsor to the left and input from this community but if you encounter a stumbling block,

could it be yellow and black jasper (like the more modern gudebrod classic twist) but over time faded by sun? also, the thread finish seems thin. perhaps spar varnish was used originally which would add a warmer amber tint to the thread and lead to the thinner look of the finish. just taking this in a different direction...

forecast was the older name, batson now calls them RX6, a seemingly much improved blank in color and quality than the older forecasts. in my experience, though they are made from somewhat less-high-tech materials than the higher priced premium blanks out there, they make excellent fly rods. i have only wrapped the 7'-9' 2-piece 3wt, the 7'-6" 4 piece 4wt and the 8' 3 piece 4wt. the first tw

i don't think any of these rods in the size you want fall in the "very fast action" category, especially not the winston WT. i could be wrong though.
