1051. Re: 2nd quality blanks
i'm just curious... why do you want cosmetically blemished fly rod blanks?

1052. Re: Transparent Wraps
i tried white nylon gudebrod thread on the old teal blue forecast blank color thinking it would go transparent. it didn't completely. in the end, after using flexcoat lite, it looked a bit like masking tape, partially somewhat transparent, otherwise beige. it was my first rod too, so it might have looked better with a better finishing technique, but i later learned it's SILK thread which goes nic

1053. Re: Forecast 3# guides
i just put the first layer of epoxy on a rainforest 7'-9" 3 weight, 2 piece fly rod. i used single foot ceramics, 4 size 8s and 4 size 6, i think they might be pac bay branded titanium finish, black insert (hardaloy?). i used the pac bay N style guide size 10 as a stripper, since i like that look more than the traditional stripper guide.. ceramic tip too. i just took a step outside to test c

1054. Re: Batson blank 3#
i am currently building a batson forecast 8 foot, 3 piece, 4 weight fly rod. paid under $20 for it from somewheres over there (<----). middle of the column. it feels nice, waving it around in my kitchen between rapping the refrigerator and scraping the cabinets. oops. i love the dark blue, especially compared to the older forecast teal shade of yuch. i ALSO am building a rod on a 7'-9"

1055. Re: DUST
i'm sure more will weigh in with probably proven solutions to this imaginable frustrating scenario but it's approaching midnight and i've only had 2 hours of sleep total over the past two nights, i haven't showered at all today and i've just poured myself another cup of coffee, an entirely questionable action in my current situation, but i feel like sharing :-)

1056. Re: Slow 3wt. blanks
i'll agree here with rick. i built a pacbay tradition, but an 8 foot, 5 weight. it didn't approach slow at all. to my somewhat inexperienced .. err, experiences, i would label mine a medium fast, MAYBE medium. probably medium in your targeted 2-3 weight. but i'm just guessing.
i'm currently building both a rainforest 7'-9" 3 weight, 2 pc, and a forecast 8 foot 4 weight, 3 pc (the post 20

i alternately keep my first either behind a door, or out in the open while making another fly rod, as a reminder what NOT to do... :-)

i received my first bottle of gudebrod color preserver (811) last week and it was fine. just had to add some balance here (chuckling) ;-)

1061. Re: Decal Connection
i AM on a dialup modem... something to consider i guess.
i just checked the source code for your home page and in the first few lines of code, it lists Microsoft Frontpage 4.0. assuming this was generated by the program as an identifier, that would probably be the problem for compatibility.
back when i was tinkering with web page creation, front page was nearly universally seen as a terrib

i WISH i had a pop up blocker... ;-)
seriously, i think it's just incompatibility with the mac platform. things created with windows/microsoft products (like frontpage or other apps) simply use proprietary code). assuming this is the problem of course...

1063. Re: Alignment indicators
am i the only one having trouble accessing therodbuilding section of Decal Connections web site? i've always tried clicking on the Rodbuilding link on the left and it just doesn't respond, although other section headings do. i'm using a macintosh computer with internet explorer, which is probably the problem. i have troubles with paypal as well. it works fine at work on a PC.

1064. Re: reaming wood seats
let me preface this that i am a beginner and there are a LOT of people more knowledgeable than i. but i still feel compelled to weigh in... ;-) in searching out reel seats, it seems very few if any use a cap and ring reel seat on a 9 foot, 5 weight. they are usually reserved for smaller rods, 4 and under, with smaller blank diameters. i'd imagine you'd have to carefully research the measuremen

1066. Re: number of trim wraps
single trim wrap??? egads! i'm having hard enough time with 3 wraps!
i just finished a fly rod where i didn't not bother with any minute pieces of thread sticking out. there were perhaps 2-3 altogether on the 9 foot 4 piece. like jay, i slice them off.
after i laid down the first coat of flex coat lite (and dried for 24 hours) i took an x-acto type knife and carefully sliced off any tiny

bill, don, todd and gerry (so far :-)...
some of my thoughts include taking a full wells grip and turning the rear section down so it tapers to the reel seat. there is also another shape called a half wells (modifed wells/western?) and i think the fenwick would work equally well. just thoughts running through my mind. these would be for small stream rods, 7-8 foot, and the idea started from

I am looking for options for a preformed cigar cork grip for a fly rod. most "cigar" designs, like the one illustrated for struble online, are symmetrical, with the thickest, bulge, in the middle, seemingly tapering slightly smaller towards each opposite end. anglers workshop offers two versions of a slightly different version of cigar.
i am looking for a different kind of "ciga

if it bothered me the way you say it bothers you, i wouldn't build it, regardless whether if does or doesn't affect performance. one of the aspects we get to address in custom rodbuilding is aesthetics. although i've gathered very minor, interesting curls and such from blanks are to be encountered on occasion, this sounds aesthetically unpleasing to me. i'd get on the phone first thing in the mo

1073. Re: Slide Band reel seat
deja vu? check two similar posts within the past week. my search has uncovered lower cost slide band fly reel seats from cortland (call them), pac bay (check versitex), even REC and struble. bob from custom tackle was also able to help out. good luck.

well, if you're going to build one fly rod, you might as well believe you'll end up building more and More and MORE fly rods after that, so it wouldn't hurt to start off with a low cost blank. many suggested (from my reading and directly to me) that mistakes will be made on the first and you'll get better as they come down the conveyor belt.
i approached it with the attitude to simply get tha

i have never used color preserver, but since i'm only a beginner, that's no surprise. i have some on order but still await its arrival (gudebrod).
i've gathered from recent postings that color preserver is used not only for maintaining the color characteristics of thread, but can also be used as a temporary glue, as in holding down fidgety trim wraps and tie off loops. i've also gathered tha

just an aside... exe files or self-running programs like dan craft's catalog, created on a pc type of computer, especially using something like microsoft's programs for windows, generally will not work on a macintosh computer. i use macintosh computers. oh well. i ordered the hard copy version.
