I made a similar comment on this board a couple weeks back if you recall. It's not much of a stretch to say that Rodmaker is easily the very best publication on the subject of custom rod building. The wealth of ideas, facts, information and overall quality put it head and shoulders above anything else. But even when you take it outside the realm of custom rod building and compare it to the other

Why is 5.25 too high for a 4 wt line?? Why is 3.57 too low for a 4 wt line??

Yes, enjoyed it and learned quite a bit from it. Funny what goes around the internet and passes as fact.
I have to say I'm also enjoying the new column by Gene Bullard. What a colorful character! His insights on this hobby down through the years is really fun reading.

845. Rod blank storage?
I'm trying to figure out a good way to store rod blanks. Something where I don't have to lift them up out of a tube but some way that allows me to have them standing up so they won't take a set. I have high ceilings about 10' and most of my blanks are 9' or under. Would love to see what other builders are doing in terms of rod blank storage. I looked a bit on the photo page but didn't really see

Rodmaker magazine has always been very, very, very good. Even excellent. But IMHO it has taken another quantum leap during 2006 and is even a cut above where it had been before. Everything is commendable; the photos, the articles, the information. Kudos.

847. Magazine Photos
Tom, I don't know who takes your photos for the mag but after flipping through the copy that arrived today I just wanted to congratulate you and whoever does that photography. These have to be the clearest, crispest, sharpest photos I think I have ever seen in a magazine of any kind. Am I wrong in thinking that they are even better now than in years past?
I have not had time to read anything i

I'd have to assume that the High Point Rod Expo is the largest gathering of professional rod builders in the world. Also the largest gathering of hobbiest rod builders in the world. Also the largest gathering of so-so, expert, novice, every day and occasional rod builders in the world. Surely there would be a good number who build or want to build two handed or the spey type rods. I think it woul

I have to say that I had my doubts, but after buying and building two CTS blanks earlier this year I will now say that these must be among the finest blanks being made today. Super light but very powerful. I don't baby my rods and they have done very well with no problems to report. Still surprised at the amount of power that they get from such small diameters and fine tips. Nothing against any o

850. Re: Selling Rods
What I'm about to say is not a knock on this board or any of the features it offers. But...............
Attempting to base ones knowledge on the basis of what is found on an internet message forum or chat room would be similar to a doctor trying to practice medicine based on the information he can glean off a medical interent forum. Well, I guess you're not going to kill anyone by building a r

You need to use some sort of wood putty for the really large pits. The brand has been discussed here before so do a search. I have some at home but I'm at the office now and can't remember the shade or type. I know it was DAP brand but that's all I can tell you off the top of my head.

Considering the cost of the graphite big game stuff, I don't see any real reason to use it. Too many really good glass blanks for these purposes out there today. And they're tougher than nails.

Hunting is also a solitary sport for many people. Sometimes you're with just one or two other guys. But many see fit to spend literally tens of thousands of dollars on their gunstocks and metal work. It's called pride of ownership and I also know fishermen who do the same thing. But they aren't able to find the same type of craftsmen in the rod building world as they can in the gunsmithing world.

I have not found any guides other than the solid titanium ones that will hold up in SW for long unless you give them some care after each day's fishing. I have plated guides that still look nearly new after ten years of use in SW. And I've seen other guys with the exact same guides that are rusted and corroded in less time. The difference was that they didn't wash their rigs after EACH day's fis

There are tens of thousands or more who shoot pool. Most use a cheap, crooked cue pulled off the rack at their local pub or sports bar. A tiny handful will spends the bucks for something really special. There is the same tiny handful that will pay extra for a nice custom rod. We’re no different in this regard than in any other craft.
But I do agree that the lack of any sort of professional r

856. Re: @#$%& deals?
I bought some cork from @#$%& from a seller with a 100% feedback rating. It was not the quality that he showed on the photo. I complained and was told "tough." I added negative feedback but the seller then turned around put negative feedback on my own 100% positive feedback score. Said I was an "unreasonable customer and did not suggest doing business with me."

After seeing the photos of Herb Knowlton's trigger seat and wood insert, I thought I would get some of those seats and try my hand at it. But I don't like the old type non cushioned hood. So what I'll do is rob the newer cushioned hood from a later model seat and install it on the older trigger style barrel. Good enough.
But then I'll have a completely useless reel seat body left without a loc

I'd like to find a source for some of those older style trigger seats myself. I can't figure out how to make the same thing work with the newer type molded seats. But I do like the cushioned hood used on the newer models.

It is a magazine that has always been very good and yet has continued to get even better over the years. Rare that such a thing happens when you have no competition. If only the phone, cable and utility services prescribed to the same business plan.

Don't know about 10 secondes being too long but 25 certainly is! Since dropping back to pretty close to 5 my decal backgrounds totally disappear. Who would have thought that something so simple as a decal could be screwed up. I guess since we all put them on plastic models when we were kids that it must have seemed like there was nothing special that had to followed to apply them. Go figure.

I'd say guide set up and distribution first. Reducing weight is always a concern and you should build as light as you practically can. Durability is also important to me as I don't want to have to reduce cheap or soft grips or handles a year or two down the road.
I do not worry much about thread colors, decoration, insignias or spine. I leave those up to the customer and will do whatever he w

In the experience of those who have used them, do the better quality nylon type gimballs hold up well enough for use on big game trolling and stand up rods? I assume the ears don't easily snap off. Aluminum gimballs seem tough on wood boat decks, even the round edged type so I want to give the nylon models a try.

I have a PacBay unit but not the newer chuck. The unit is great, don't be afraid of it. You'll like it a lot. I would get the upgraded chuck. If truth be told the ONLY thing I don't like on my unit is the chuck. So the upgraded unit should make a good unit even better.

The black grips from MudHole are the firmest I've found. But not always. They seem to vary from shipment to shipment. But none have been soft or spongy.
If you want something firm why not flock a cork grip or overwrap with leather? I do the leather thing when I build HD saltwater rods.

From what I understand Dale is getting up in years. Might be well past his lifetime before he could ever recoup the fee to reprint it. Didn't Any Dear say something about a reprint? Maybe he's the one to ask.

Don't let it puddle up and you won't have those bubbles or whatever. Apply a good wet coat but keep turning the rod while your brush is on it until any excess is gone. I think you will find that this way you won't get those bubble looking things.

870. Re: Spline/an effect
Don Phillips wrote a book called The Technology of Fly Rods. It's a great read if you haven't read it already. If you build fly rods you should get a copy and keep it handy. I got to speak with Don a few times over the years. He used to build solid graphite rods. They were a little heavy but fished nicely. I own one.
Don's theory was that you should spine your blank but put the spine at 90 de
