Even the heavy wire version of the Recoils are VERY light weight compared to other guides on the market so you can use a slightly larger guide if you want to without it really adding much extra weight . I would be extremely surprised if a heavy wire size 1 Recoil snake wasn't lighter than a thin wire size 1/ 0 H & H chrome plated snake as the size 1 Recoils feel almost weightless compared

The zirconium guides make great stripper guides, and the custom color rings can really add a nice touch to any rod but they are VERY heavy compared to wire guides or Fugi Ti/SIC guides IMHO. I have used the zirconium guides on quite a few fly rods in the past and to be honest I am slowly stripping them all down and replacing them with something lighter as the weight of them really is quite noti

I also like these blanks in the lighter line weights,especially the 4pc 7ft6 4wt and 2pc 7ft6 3wt.

I'm not sure if the Deer Creek rods are available as blanks, but I don't think they are. I would contact Bob Meiser at R.B.Meiser Rods to the left.He had a large hand in designing those rods and he may have a very similar blank of his own that would be very close,if not better.

A former sponsor and wholesaler use to sell size 28 gold fly hooks that were labeled as gold "crystal" hooks I think. From what I can recall,Dan Craft use to have items from this company shipped to him so maybe try giving Dan a shout to see if he could possibly order you some in.

Thanks Tom.Unfortunately I've sent numerous emails to him but no response. If anyone out there has his PH# or has talked to him lately I would definitely appreciate the help in contacting him.

I was wondering if anyone out there has talked to Joe Fehr lately or knows how to contact him other than email? I got a message from him regarding Rodmaker Magazine no longer being available in Canada and that subscription refunds were being issued but that was over 2 weeks ago. Thanks, Tony Dowson

I always wrap as close to the edge of the female ferrule as possible and think it's probably a bad idea to start a ferrule wrap 3/8" back from the edge. That said,if your friend wants to keep the wrap back from the end of the ferrule strictly for cosmetic purposes maybe he could do a under wrap tight to the edge of the blank with a thread that would blend right in to the color of the blank an

Hi Terry, how does the final color of the CA finished grip compare to the Tru Oil? I have used Tru Oil on numerous burl grips and do like the result but your CA finished grips look much lighter in color and are clearer.I can get a fairly high gloss finish with multiple coats of Tru Oil but my grips definitely look a lot darker than yours. As much as I like the darker grips,I like the look of you

Have a look at the blanks made by CTS,Lamiglass,St Croix,Rainshadow, and Dan Craft(my personal favorite when it comes to best bang for the buck). These blanks all receive rave reviews(do a search here for feedback on them as there is plenty of it) and offer performance that rivals the most expensive big name blanks on the market, yet some of them are a fraction of the cost.

I've looked for the same type of gasket material locally and couldn't find any either.I did find various types of craft foam, but nothing as thin as I wanted and the thin "black" gasket material that I did happen to find was more of a dark grey than black. I'm still on the lookout for some really thin and dark black gasket material for trim rings.I want this kind of material for trim

I use slide band seats on all my shorter 4wt fly rods and under and love them.Honestly,I can't imagine using a screw lock seat for these shorter, lighter rods.I have never had an issue with a reel slipping from them and I have close to a dozen personal rods with these seats on. Most of the slide band seats I use are of uplocking design(personal preference when it comes to cosmetics) and are eit

I used the REC PLRN seat shown in the above link with the 2 nickel silver slide bands and a cork insert on my 0wt Sage SLT. I went with the rope knurling pattern rather than the diagonal knurling and really liked the look.I've had no issues with my reels slipping on this seat, although it can take a little longer to get the reel seated and aligned properly with the 2 slide bands.

For the 4wt fly blank, check out the 6pc 9ft Dan Craft FTL. Great performance and a great value too.

Given that you don't want a really fast action rod I would rule out the FT,even though it is a great blank and is extremely versatile. It is a very different rod than the SIG V,with a soft tip / very fast action and a very powerful butt. Many choose to overline these rods. Given your needs,I would go with either the FTL or SIG V,depending on how many pieces you want. The best thing to do is g

I'd go with the Dan Craft FT as well. It's well under your price range, very light weight, has a nice feel with a powerful butt and fast action, and is definitely not what I would call a fragile blank. I might recommend the 5wt blank though,at least in the 9ft models available. It all depends on what kind of distances you plan on fishing at most of the time. The 9ft 6wt blank would be a good lon

Gary, definitely contact Joe Fehr! Like many Canadians I've been wanting to get Rodmaker Magazine for some time now and thanks to Joe that is now possible. The magazine is simply a must have for any rodbuilder and price wise is a steal considering all the knowledge packed in to every issue.

For doing static guide placements I use thin rings cut from surgical tubing as it easily allows me to move the guides up or down the blank. For this purpose I think they are much better than having to wrap and unwrap pieces of tape. Once I know for sure where they are going to go I use a thin layer(a thin layer of this adds no measurable weight and the bond can easily be broken if needed) of Fl

I built 2 9ft6 6wt IMX's as my first rod projects and used the A7 graphite seats on them.If I were looking to build a 8wt or something then I would choose the A8 as it's a pretty big seat. I have no complaints with the performance of the A7's at all. They are very light weight and hold a reel just fine.I don't care for the look of the flush mount hood on them that much so I recessed them under

If you are definitely going to use the Ti/SIC Fugi's on a 4wt I would keep them as small as possible.I would use a 5mm ring if a 4wt line and leader knot will fit through it,or 5.5mm max.Any larger and you will definitely notice the difference the weight makes. I've put size 6 Ti/SIC Fugi Concept guides on 5wt and 6wt rods, and put REC Recoils on the same rods. There is no question in my mind wh

That's a great tip on the spray on clear laquer Bob! I often use this for covering my inscriptions so they won't smudge when I put on my final coat of finish and yet for some reason I never would have thought about using it over a feather inlay.I am also glad to hear that Threadmaster will adhere well enough to it.

I've used their purple shades of thread matched with holographic ring guides and really liked the result. Their Grape with CP looks absolutely gorgeous.MUCH nicer than the Gudebrod purple IMHO.

I've seen quite a few of these same heads selling on a certain large online @#$%& site lately. You may want to keep your eye out for them. Also you might want to post a want ad on the Spey Pages site,if you haven't already done that and also check with a few of their sponsors to see if they have any left.Of course if any sponsors here happen to have any for sale,I would hope that you would cons

I have a large pet cockatoo and dust is always an issue for me.He gives off a fine white powder and when it becomes air borne indoors it is extremely difficult to deal with, even with 2 large air cleaners. To make things worse I often have my bird in the same room that I wrap rods in(I live in a small place and can't really prevent this situation, although I make sure to apply finish in a separate r

I really love Robert Venneri's seats but I am not sure if they are still available(I don't think they are).Fortunately I managed to squirrel away a good number of them(lots of Esopus and other Uplocking models) for my own personal rods. The Bellinger ULSBN and ULSBDN seats are really stunning seats for lighter rods, especially with the stabilized black ash, amboyna, maple burl,or box elder burl i

Tru Oil really makes the grain in burl cork pop.I've also used U40 Cork Seal, and it looks OK,but Tru Oil looks much nicer IMHO. You can add a coat or two of it and have kind of a satin or semi gloss finish,or you can add several more coats and create a much darker glossy finish. Both look great.
