Mostly it eliminates extra steps. Using CP successfully involves multiple coats so there is more time involved. Also, I've noticed on the two rods I used CP that the epoxy seemed to not adhere as well, most notably around the guides. While this may be due to the application technique I use, it hasn't occurred on the other rods I've built. Also, most people I've built rods for can't/don't notice t

The CP should cause the regular nylon to become opaque. Although, if they are light colors and are not packed very tight, there is a good chance you may see what's below regardless, whether it be rod blank or underwrapped thread. I generally just use NCP thread and forego the CP. The colors may look a little "flatter" when finished, but it eliminates other headaches I associate with CP.

I do not know of any local rod building classes. There used to be a guy in San Antonio that would show you how to build rods and charge for components, but, I think he went out of business.

Lori,
We traded some messages on Corpusfishing.com. My "initial setup" from several years ago (which I'm still using) cost me about $400. This included the following:
Flex Coat Hand Rod Wrapper, 18rpm finishing motor, and Flex Coat Rod lathe.
Small belt sander for guide prep.
Various epoxies (5-minute, slow cure, and finishing) and color preserver
Modest selection of Thread

Just as Ellis said....I have some that my grandfather used many years ago that still work fine....give them the proper care after being in the salt and they'll be fine.

A plain stainless frame with SiC guides might be an "inbetween" solution.

Tartan wraps are a blending of plain and NCP threads to create the appearance of plaids...process is in the Advanced Custom Rod Building book by Dale Clemens.

The ones that I have are unfinished graphite, definately not black. They are probably medium-light power/mod-fast actionactions and Andy sold them to me as popping rods. I'll see if they still have tags on them this evening and report back. Your e-mail address is hidden, you can send a message to my home address at brahe@gvtc.com if

Steve,
Are these the medium action popping rods in an unfinished gray graphite? If so, I might have a couple at home I could part with...I bought some from Andy a year ago and they may not have labels on them, but, I'll check this evening....the shipping charges may not be cheap since they are 1-piece 8-footers.

Do want help creating a "weave" of this pattern, or a "cross-wrap"....two different beasts.
