211. Re: wraps without CP
Putter, Can you tell me why you think CP on a wrap is inferior? I don't follow the line that CP causes the wraps to be weaker. I think CP accomplishes the same thing finish does to the wrap. It provides a seal and it locks the wraps together. That the finish helps to lock the guide down is just an added benefit. CP is another tool the rod builder has at his or her disposal. I would only ask that

Tom, That seems to be a standard shape on ready-made grips. To me at least, it's a universal grip that allows any number of hand sizes to grip the rod adequately. It does consider the little guys & gals along with the adult hand sizes. Personally, I think it is far too narrow for long term casting use. It fatigues my hand because I grip them tightly. That was primarily why I shaped my own han

Bruce, Trim wraps should not be so loose that they move easily or stick up noticeably. If done right, trim wraps, even a single wrap, should be pretty tight.
I don't recommend using a butane lighter to eliminate your fuzzies. The flame is just too hard to control. I trim them as close as possible to the wrap, and then use my alcohol torch lamp, or do what Jay suggested.

The species invasion situation here in Alaska are Pike. Someone back in the 1950's -60's introduced them to a "closed" lake system, and they have spread like weeds in just about every lake, stream, and river in the Matanuska and Susitna drainage areas. The catch per day is very liberal because Pike are suspected of wiping out trout many lakes and streams, and have also been suspected as

At some point in the process of the rod bending, the line is going to touch the blank. I don't think you can avoid it entirely unless you place so many guides on the rod that it would be impossible for the line to touch.
I go for a happy medium and try to attain a good arc. I also locate the smallest guides adjacent to the tip guide within 3 to 4 inches of each other because I figure that is

Dove, Room temperature plays a big role on curing time, especially in winter. I've had to endure slow curing finishes, even as recent as over the Christmas holiday. I usually leave the wrap alone for a couple of days, testing the cure by checking the remaining finish left in the cup or on my foil-lined mini bake pan. Sometimes it will take 3 to 5 days to completely cure.
Any longer than that, I

Emory & Gary,
It's just a description that is particular to fish Red Salmon, and only in particular rivers. It is not snagging and it absolutely requires the fish be caught with the hook set in its mouth. There are rules specifically set for Red Salmon in certain rivers. It is regulated right down to a particular unweighted fly called the Russian River Fly. The Alaska Fish and Game folks r

Dan, I don't do as much salt water fishing as I do river fishing. So I'm not sure how well the following method is known. But on the few times a year when I venture out to the Cook Inlet up here in Alaska, I use Spiderwire and other similar type lines as the first 100 feet of line to minimize drag against the tremendous currents of the inlet, which is supposed to have the fastest currents on eart

Tom, I have been using the Forecast for about 2 seasons. I think it is worth the money spent. It's not the precise machine such as a Renzetti or a Jet/Delta mini/standard lathe, but for a home build like myself, it accomplishes the job I need it to do. I know of quite a few cutom rod shops and repair shop who employ them daily to make business happen. They seem to be satisfied.
Since I don't bui
