John and Mike,
Not to carry this on forever, but I just finished doing what I shoulda done before my 1st post to Mike... a couple minutes of research and a re-read of Mike's post. Having done so I now understand what Mike's reference to "pearl rods" meant. When Mike said that the originals were not u/v tolerant I was thinking "fishing rods"... to the extent that I w

Mike and John,
I did not understand the background that the two of you have pointed out. I certainly did not intend to be/sound disrespectful to Mike. If I've misjudged. and it certainly sounds like I did, I apologize.

Mike,
What does it say for a vendor that will wait to deplete his stock before correcting a problem? I don't think I'd buy anything from him to ensure I'm not part of his solution for other problems.

Billy,
If your book doesn't get me where I need to be with wrapping, I guess I'll volunteer the 'bar crew' to at least count votes.

Many many thanks to Dr. Hanneman for quickly removing the mystery from what (before) seemed a bit confusing. His presentation on this subject was OUTSTANDING!

67. Re: Show Tip
Mike,
Oh well... given the number of regular contributors of great information, it would have to be a REALLY BIG cooler anyhow.

I hope Billy is bringing a good supply... he may have to go for the 2nd printing after the show.

Burton,
I've been putting a little wipe-on/wipe-off car wax on my rods a couple times a year for the past 20 years or more... Primarily to help protect them from the salt, make washing them down a bit quicker. I haven't noticed any problem with the rods or wraps in all that time.

Mike,
Think a rollaround cooler would be ok? That way I could keep a couple of cold adult beverages handy and share them with all of you who have so freely shared your knowledge and passion for rod building. Or maybe I should just get a large bag like you suggested.

Bob,
Thanks! Under the title of QUESTIONS THAT I'M NOT SURE WHETHER TO ASK is "What does the 1+ mean?" See you at the show.

Anyone know which vendors sell these telescoping blanks? Wonder if there'll be any at the show.

Tom,
Glad to see you are considering a 3 day show next year. This will be my first show and I'm a little concerned that I won't be able to adequately budget enough time for the seminars and still be as thorough as I want to be while visiting all the vendors' booths as well has have time to meet the many great contributors to this site. I understand that 3 days may not be doable, sure ho

Steve,
For EVA grips with a bore that is more than a tad "undersized", I find that 20 seconds or so in the micro-wave warm them up just enough to facilitate the stretch required to slide them into their final resting place. For grips with a bore nearer to (but less than) the rod diameter, I don't find any reason at all to heat them, the lubricating effect of the epoxy makes them

I see the MudHole guys have some nice St. Croix SCII SW blanks on sale that might suit the need. I've been trying not to buy anything until the show, but just couldn't help myself.

Jerry, for $263 I might just fly out to San Diego and fish for a few days... and be back in time for the show. More seriously (but not much more), does flying to the show raise any big problems with getting your new goodies back home? I guess USPS and FED-EX will get a spike in business from the High Pt area.

Tim mentions "minimal longitudinal shrinking" which raises a question I've been wanting to ask some of you who've been using the shrink-tube products. How do you calculate the longitudinal shrinkage in order to ensure proper fit to the reel seat, fighting butt, etc?
thanks,
Clyde

This year is shaping up pretty nicely... 6 weeks to the show (like a late Christmas), 8 weeks to retirement, 10 weeks to some spring training baseball in Ft Lauderdale, and only about 12 weeks to spring striper fishing.... looking good. Now if I can only get my handles half as nice as Mike B's and wraps like Billy V's I'd be a happy camper.

I'll be driving down from Baltimore if anyone needs a ride. Certainly have room for one or two.

I'm getting concerned that I'll spend so much time in the workshops that I won't have time to visit all the booths and see all the goodies. Mike's sounds like a must see!

I'm looking forward to meeting some of the folks who contribute so much to this site by offering their ideas and experience. Room is booked, couple of $$ set aside for goodies, truck is gassed and so am I.

Bill,
I'd like to add my appreciation to that expressed by Richard.... great article and nice technieque. I'm looking forward to the follow-ups too. Meantime I'll put some dowels in the wrapper and give it a try.

If you live anywhere near a farm coop (or similar) you can pick up a package of castration bands for about $3. Dental bands work well too, but you need to get the stronger ones or use several together. But, as stated earler, masking tape will work fine with a little practice.

Raymond, it can't be that easy... or can it? After applying the scotch magic tape do you coat it with Krylon or anything? Do you know if it'll hold up over a long period? Guess I'll be trying it out on a broken blank this weekend, sounds just too darn easy. Thanks!
