Congrats Ron! My wife and I each bought each other half of a new furnace blower/repair. Kids' made out like bandits. We are are warm and happy as all get out. My lathe and digicam have to wait. If it wasn't for kids, I'd be freezing but taking good pics of finely turned wood articles.

I apply finish, then the decal, then CP, then permagloss. I like the "floating" look it gives.

Personally, I use Decal Connection unless people specify a handwritten signature. I'm not a high volume builder, but even if I was, the cost of DC making your decal gets lost in the noise. For the quality they provide, it's just not worth it to me to buy a certain printer to do it myself.

Hit a sewing store if you have one in your area and see what they have in Sulky, Madeira or Robison-Anton. That's what I do if I'm looking for a particular shade of color.

I started with the netcraft screw/clamp on rollers and tensioner. It's what I still use. The setup may not be perfect, but it does that job that I need it to do.

Myles, I don't do beer in winter. Only the brown stuff. But yeah, I've had my share tonight..and your share, and Bill's share..and... well, you get the point. I've known and drank with many of you Aussies, and you guys are almost professional!

Bill, I'm seeing your posts so they are getting through. I've had some weird stuff happen on my screen after the change but I just ignore them now. I can't answer your question, but I see what you write and that's the important thing!

Charles, I just use my fingers, unless they are really little guides, then I use some needlenose pliers with leather to protect the guides. Got tired of grinding skin. There is a neat little jig out there that holds guides for grinding, but I'm too cheap to get one. How exactly do you seal a guide foot?

It doesen't look bad to me. I have an 8'6" 5 wt. that has 10 guides on it. If the rod calls for an extra guide, use it. Charts are more like guidelines than actual rules.

Haven't worked with bog oak, but I'm very interested in the wife swapping ads... I wouldn't mind a trade, but only with strangers. I couldn't pass mine on to friends. They don't deserve that..... David, I'm planning on an Irish rod for myself in a couple months. I was thinking of a shamrock and/or Irish harp weave. Something to think about. Emory has a great idea... just make sure you

While you are waiting for patterns, can I borrow it Bill? Give the wife a good kiss for that! One of those deep sloppy "when we were dating" kisses! Looking forward to what you do with it!!

On larger guides I use a dremel. Actually a two speed B&D Wizard/Versapak (on sale at Kmart for under $20 if I recall). I have a single speed Dremel that runs at something like Warp 9... way too fast for me on guides. Durn near melts the feet off in the blink of an eye. On smaller guides I use needle files. I've ruined too many little guides using a dremel because I'm not coordinated enou

Emory, I'm not really a student. I know just enough philosophy to be a real PITA to myself and others! Personally, I agree with Plato. I believe that truth should be used to show reality to change the perception. Unfortunately, most people "believe what they see", that a crooked rod is bad and have no patience or desire to listen to why it isn't neccessarily so. If it looks bad, it mu

Exactly Emory! A blank where the spine is the same as the bend is a rarity. And now I live in a world full of rednecks that think that shoving their fist down a catfish's throat and pulling them into the boat is good sport! These are the same guys who complain that their rod isn't "aligned" properly. I need to go back home... LOL Compromise is a term that I hate, but have to li

6 guides??? On an ice rod? I only ice fished it northern MN where I grew up. Up there, it's grab the line hand over hand. Rod action plays no part in the game. When wearing heavily reinfornced leather choppers (Randy migh know what a northern chopper is) rod action isn't a priority. The only purpose of the rod is to hold the line holding equipment! I've built summer walleye rods with 6 g

Ken, congrats on a really cool toy! I tried laser alignment on guides before but I couldn't get past the comedy of a guy in a weaver stance aiming his pistol down a fishing rod. Emory, I get what you are saying. I'm a visual guy. If I can't see it, it's hard for me to learn or explain. On straight rods I go with spine. On curved rods, I usually go with "what gives me the straight l

Ryan, how do you attach the guides after you dowel them?

I've used silk on and off, but I generally avoid it like the plague. I can't stand that stuff. I haven't used enough of it to know what is going to happen when I put on finish. I just used some green silk on a green/blue blank without CP and it turned black. In very bright sunlight, at just the right angles, I can detect a few specks of what resembles green, but I think that's cuz I'm trying

I could see where the dowel would work perfectly as long as all of the guides are the same size. And the dowel has no warp. Heck, I can't buy a 8' 2x4 without some warp being involved!

Outside of pure luck, I don't think so John. The closest way I can think of to do it is to mark top dead center of the blank and then tape glue the guides to that mark. I've done it with tape and tubing, but there's always at least one guide that needs at least a bump over once the wrapping is done to get them perfectly lined up. One of the first things every person has done on getting one

If there is, I haven't dreamed one up. I've tried thread, chalk lines, tape, etc. They all work to get an initial location but for me there is always some tweaking to do. The key to a good line up for me is before taping on guides, make sure the tip is exactly where it needs to be. Perfectly level with the reel seat. When all the guides are wrapped, sight it down using the reel seat and tip li

I pretty much only use PG on underwraps or as a top coat on my Flex Coat. I've used it all on its own on a lot of experiments and haven't had this problem, but I've always waited at least one hour between coats. If you've already used 3 coats, I have a suspicion that the faults were already there and you just didn't notice them, or something changed on this particular coat. Were you handling

I'm sure this was mentioned somewhere, but I can't seem to find it so I apologize for yet another question on the new system.. I've registered but my email is "Hidden". How do I change this? Please keep in mind that I'm technologically challenged and working with windows 95 and seriously outdated browsers. comesky@eart&
