Thanks roger, I will definitely try both ways mentioned. My only concern is the co-worker in mention is not a seasoned fishermen. Instead he is a hiker/backpacker looking to add another gadget to his arsenal. So whichever method I choose has to be compatible with potentially poor casting technique. I will have to put effort into testing these guide configurations with multiple and even improper t

I was asked for "the lightest most compact" custom rod I could build. I think it's a fun challenge, I offered a fly rod with a loose balsa wood bobbin to hold line instead of a reel.l, but this guy is far from a fly fishermen.

I want to go as short as I can without sacrificing performance.

Gentlemen, I am going to build an ultra light backpacking rod for a co-worker. It's going to be a 4 piece 5'6" rodgeeks and I intend to use Pacbay Minima titanium M guides. Other ultralights I've built used 16-8-5 reduction guides. However for this rod I want it as low profile as possible. It will utilize a 500 series spinning reel 4 or 6lb mono. What minima match reduction guide sizes

Stan I have had a good bit of success using stainless steel leader wire. I use somewhere around 30-60lbs tooth proof wire leader. Make a little triangle and twist together at one end, this will give you a handle. The other end I just bend real slightly, maybe 30 degrees. You can run the wire up against the edge of the thread wrap, it will drag a small bit of epoxy with it. This ideally will wet t

I am certainly not qualified to give advice on this subject. However with that being said AB1 has some really nice looking roller guides as well.

Seth, Anglers Workshop has their own line of blanks. Of interest most to me, they have a line of travel rods that are more Inshore/pier oriented then others. I think it would be valuable to add.

Actually! already came in handy. I have a co-worker looking for an UL backpacking blank. Up to now the shortest section length I've seen was 18.5". Using your database I saw that rodgeeks has a 4 piece 5'6" blank. Great stuff!

Bookmarked, awesome resource Seth. Thank you! Not at all a criticism just wishful thinking, but CCS info on all those blanks would be cool!

Proglu is more of a liquid that can flow into cavities. Quite often used to repair loose reel seats. ProPaste is a thick goo that does not flow and stays where it is put. ProPaste is typically used to attach reel seats/grips/butts etc etc

Jody, That is how it is done. Mudhole is a retailer and their brand of blanks is MHx. You would be building an assembled rod, using components supplied from multiple sources therefore you are the manufacturer.

Herb, Sorry if my post was a bit of a ramble. You are of course correct about a rod blank versus a built up rod with thread guides and epoxy. When I think of components I personally include rod blanks in that list. My statements were only meant as examples. I understand Phil is only asking about rod blanks. I also completely disagree with you about the ability to have a conversation about obje

To Phil Ewanicki I typed up what I thought was a very well worded response to your original post, hit the submit button and poof gone.. Oh well. Let me start by saying that I share your sentiment whole heartily. I work in the automotive engineering industry specifically in NVH (Noise Vibration and Harshness). It is quite literally my daily responsibility to take, analysis and present objective

Fernando, I cannot agree more. This was also my first year in attendance, and my wife and I had an amazing time. We left our hotel room at 6:20am and did not return until 11:45pm. Absolutely fantastic group of people.

I sent you an email Michael, can't wait. I have a bunch of cubical desk tops from work. I'm hoping to have a long rod building table finished by the end of this week. I think my mudhole order comes in today and get bit outdoors tomorrow. It's going to be a fishing geeks dream!! Thanks again.

Michael, I've just ordered my first two blanks and supplies to build them. I had plans to construct my own hand wrapper, and by no means can't afford one eventually. However it would be a great help and really awesome to start with a quality tool to get off on the right foot. I'm as new as it comes. I purchased two blanks two handle kits some thread, epoxy and a dryer. The only thing I don't

The wife and I stopped by the Hitena booth. . . 3 times last night. I spoke to Gabe and Scott pretty extensively. Hitena has been off my radar until now, but I was very impressed with the products. We picked up some thread, the super awesome fly tackle cases and some flourocarbon line. We are really impressed with everything we saw. Big thumbs up!
