Sorry guys, it's been a long quarantine and I haven't slept much! I do static deflection very similar to how it's depicted on the anglers resource site. I use an adjustable angle PVC tube to slip the rod handle Into and a weighted pulley that I can put any amount of tension through. The problem I have with static deflection with the rod mounted horizontally is convenience and space. On any longer

Phil, for my own curiosity try first fastening the rod at a 45 degree angle and trying again. I tried static testing horizontally and subjectively had the same results. Again subjectively I seem to notice a large difference once I tip the rod up changing the force vector.

Try emailing North fork composites, they may have a current equivalent.

Levi you would probably be ok with MW20s on that reel but as reel sizes go up microwave guides also come in bigger sizes. I use MW30s on my inshore rods and MW50s are good for bigger surf reels.

I use a spooling tool that allows both axial and radial rotation of the spool. There are alot of Chinese knockoffs available on line of this Japanese tool. I believe Daiichi Seiko is the original, they make an excellent FG only took as well. Anyway I use the tool to spool all of my spinning feels, doesn't matter if it was twisted on the spool or not. The rotation of the bail arm and tension on th

Sound like maybe you didn't have the threads completely sealed? Most manufacturers recommend more then one coat of thread sealer. Personally I use atleast 3 coats.

Gentlemen,
I'd like to add a followup question. I've read extensively about Madeira polyneon and even have a spool. As many of you have noted it contains a silicone lubricant and must be sealed with color preserver. Here is the question. If Madeira contains silicone and silicone is the bane of rod craft does it cross contaminate other threads, and or your thread carriage? I have heard so many

+1 On Steve's comment. Try a tip top with a sleeker cage design. Rotating the guides to the top may indeed make tip wrapping worse.
As far as finding the spine, I never do. Like may others here I build on the straightest axis.

I use a Work Sharp knife and tool sharpener Ken Onion edition. It does a very fine job, also sharpens knives well!

I don't have decades of experience, but I have always used the high temp hot melt designed for rod building. I've never had an issue. For an example of abuse, I once did a full baseball bat hookset while frog fishing from shore. I was walking a rather large soft body frog and forgot to raise my rod. I swung acrossed the grass probably four or more feet. The tip top was only held on with the hot m

I see how it works now. It does work for me as you describe. Try the bottom Mark.

Alex, it is going to depend how long your grip is and how quickly you want to shape it. The main issues will be deflection and out of balance. If you have a long grip it is more likely to be out of balance and the rod will want to flex as you apply any force to sand or o

James, the microwave guide system is an excellent choice. In my experience I see very similar results between a properly layed out KF concept and Microwave guide train. The big difference with microwaves for the new builder, is that there is no guess work. I highly recommend you give them a shot. I use alot of the Airwave guides, super light and no issues with the lack of traditional rings to rep

Gary,
I have nothing to offer as far as a purpose built slip bobber rod, but I can share some technique that works for me. #1 first and foremost I have had such a better experience with slip bobbers after I threw them all in the trash and switched to the everlasting slip bobber or ESB. Check them out if you haven't they are true game changers in my opinion, I have zero affiliation just a happ

Balance beams can be extremely precise. Technically most ultra sensitive scales are a balance beam to a high resultion sensor. Then instrumentation companies can also use one sensor for multiple scales with different measurement ranges.
Forgive my babbling, I am an instrumentation nerd.

Just for fun, the #16 was un-prepared. After grinding the foot I am at 20.9gn originally 21.2, just thought I would add that if anyone was curious. That's 30% of one of #3 running guides.

The scale I am using has a resolution of 0.1 grain and an accuracy rating of +/-0.1grain. I calibrated prior to measuring using two 50gram standard masses. Gently blowing on it from about a foot away registers over 20grains.
