I use Rod Bond paste epoxy for reel seats and for ramping. Ramping is best done with a pallet knife for general application and denatured alcohol dipped finger tip while turning the rod for smoothing and shaping. I suggest if time allows , set reel seat one day and ramp the next day, cuts way back on oopsies .

The adapters are in Rod Maker Volume 20- issue 2 . I used 1oz., 2oz. and 4oz. bottles that I save from epoxy, color preserver. brush cleaner. Chuck the bottle cap/ with bottle attached in the lathe and cut off the bottom and clean out the bottle. Just for reference I mark a ring around the bottle about a half inch below the shoulder of the now bottomless bottle. Next I cut four slit

You might want to consider setting up and using the bottle adapters I submitted and Tom published in Rod Maker 'magazine. You never have to deal wit such problems again, as you 'never have to put the grips in the chuck jaws again.

If you don't wrap the tip, the job will always look unfinished, no amount of, "It don't matter", is going to change that."

Is this a one piece or two piece rod -seat situation? Question is = Does the front grip butt up against the reel seat or is there a threaded adapter between the reel seat and the rod blank?

Toms got it right, in so much as every spool of nylon thread has two colors , with and with out color preserver. There is also the use of marking pens such as Sharpe to change the color a few shades to bring a thread in closer to match.

It's all subjective, as in, how good is your work, what are you worth per hour, add 20 % to your time calculation and your value. Next learn how to pull three different colors out of every spool of nylon thread you use, accept black of course. You need more drying motors, and adapters to save time and protect yourself from wasting time fixing unnecessary and totally avoidable problems. Alc

Have you checked with your local carpet retailers. carpet is shipped on large heavy walled tubes about 8 to 10 ft. long.. They may just point you to the dumpster out back.

To me a Custom rod is one built with direct customer input on its specks, design, component placement and so forth. If you just build a rod and sell it, while its custom to the builder who may build another just like at any time. To me it would be considered a 'limited production' rod . Your mileage may very.

Have you tryed spinning the thread to check and see if its unwound letting the metal mylar become loose from the carrier thread underneath. This may allow the to stretch more and the mylar to simply slip and slide loosely about the carrier.

I suggest stainless steel leader wire single strand 360 lbs. or higher. Easy to shape , good spring quality, coiled or straight or in combination. I make a lot of springs and small tools from different sizes of leader wire. I repair fishing tackle and there,s a lot of situations they just don't make tools to address.

I use bottle adapters, fits every thing every time . Four oz. plastic bottle and a rubber band. Cut the bottom off the bottle, 1/2 inch down from the top shoulder , cut the side four equal with . slip it over the grip and rubber band it on . I use 4oz, 2oz. and one oz size bottles . Been using them for over twenty years. just make sure the cap is tight.

I use an older custom power wrap everyday and buy my drive belts, 'O' rings at the Ace hardware for about a buck a throw. Nice part is also have a line winder that uses the same belt, so I keep several on hand all the time .

You know were the guide ring is going to sit, tape the guide in place. Then use a point to scratch a line top of the blank indicating ring placement. Now choose a constant (I use a 1/4 inch wide steel ruler) laid flat against the tip of the guide foot and scratch a line on the blank to mark outside the edge of the ruler. This way all my under wraps will automatically size themselves c

Not to worry folks, I'm not having any problems measuring epoxy, I use pumps. I cant recall the last time I missed a measurement on the mix. I do change the pumps about every five years or so. Other than that, there is no advantage to me using syringes. With the pumps I just count the strokes, equal A equal B . Ive tried both syringes and pumps, I prefer pumps . There is no right or wron

I hope to never again match the results I experienced with syringes. Haven't picked one up for epoxy work in well over twenty years. Guess my mileage just varied.

For years we poured in the graduated cups. about 90%+ success, tryed syringes less than 35% success, wife and I both gave up. Switched to pumps and now near thirty years with pumps, still running at about 99% success. I have a simple routine , equal stokes, A, B, mix, pour, flame, (to remove bubbles) and apply . I have a 1/2 cc set of pumps set up in two ounce bottles and a 2 cc set of

Sounds like you have the proper guide in mind, one small suggestion from many years of service and repair on saltwater rods with roller guides. You may wish to remove the rollers from the guide frame when epoxying the guide to prevent epoxy from running down the frame and epoxying the rollers to the frame. It might amaze you to see how many factory rods get sold with the roller locked up and
