The sidewinder PRO from sportsmens direct is very nice for the money - its a schooley type reel with a bit more durability. They sell the classic schooley's as well

I use them on ice rods 99% of the time...i've never had mine freeze up too badly but add little carnauba wax and they're good to go if you have issues. They stand up to quite a bit of abuse as well

Frabill also sells a similar product for threading ice fishing spring bobbers - it has a bead on the handle end and therefore cannot be used to thread guides but works fine on bait casting reels

The rod building data sheet is an excellent starting point and can be modified/personalized very easily. I use it for all of my builds

They're great for introducing children to a spinning reel...it trains them to fish with a balanced rod with the same reel/handle/rod orientation. I started my 2 oldest boys out on underspin reels and they transitioned to UL spinning setups using the same rod seamlessly. There was nothing wrong with the underspins but they both wanted to learn to use a spinning reel for bass (worming) and catfishi

If you want anything over 32" you'll have to go with the Batson - it is the best option out there for fish over 10lbs. There are options out there for shorter blanks (30-38") but nothing I would hand a nice laker off of while working a baitcaster and 1/2oz up baits

drywall saw, tape the blank, go slow - the teeth don't "grab" as much as say a metal hacksaw blade
4" grinder with a thin wheel works as well as mentioned above

41. Re: Ice blanks
If you want the longer noodle type rod the DH Al Dente is the way to go. If you're into sanding your own then the Sportsman's Direct fiberglass blanks offer a very nice base for creating a custom noodle - you can go with a 36" extreme taper for example and sand from tip to about 9" down the blank to create a noodle type action with plenty of backbone and length. Their shorter 28" I

If you lay on a glob of finish on with your brush then pull the finish from butt to tip on the rod with your brush it will never be wavy. use fast strokes to keep the finish uniform. This works well for longer areas of continuous finish

All, I need some assistance selecting a blank to use for light river catfishing. I fish the Mississippi river for current break catfish which means anchoring or drifting with a floating style Lindy or santee cooper style rig. Very different than most folks idea of catfishing. Weights used are never over 3/4 oz and are typically 3/8-1/2oz. Bait includes crawlers, leeches or crawfish - no huge chun

The CFX grips are foam cores that can easily be reamed to size but keep in mind they come uncoated - to get a nice gloss finish you will have to apply epoxy. Have you considered making your own?
A foregrip is not needed - personal preference there
You will have to mock up the rod to balance the build - you might want to do this after the guides are finished for best results

Or cut them at an angle all at once then wrap closed - if you burnish the cut ends so they fray and fluff out they'll lay down on the blank smoother under the locking wrap.

0 problems and these rods have been used (abused) all the way down to -15*F for hours on end. They also flex much more than an open water blank

I've done several ice rods with rustoleum 2x ultra cover color and gloss clear - they don't chip or crack
For prep I sand the blank, clean with anhydrous alcohol and lint free rag, spray a light coat of base color, allow it to dry for 2-3hrs depending on the temperature then follow up with 2 more heavier coats. The next day I shoot 2 even coats of clear. Allow it to cure for at least 5 days to

Thorne Bros. sells their power noodle blank for $30 something
Sportsmens direct has several fiberglass blanks that can be sanded to a custom noodle action - the extreme taper glass blanks are very nice for this. The IHS blanks they have in L and UL make a great foundation for a noodle blank out of the box. The IHS ML blank has a ton of backbone and makes a great bullwhip style rod when sanded a
