The thread I am planning on using is designed for hand embroidery, my wife who uses a machine to embroider assures me there is no lubricant in thread designed for hand use. She is a pretty smart woman so I am assuming she knows what she is talking about. Worst case scenario is it doesnt look good and I have to rewrap, its a Covid project so its not like Im pressed for time. Thank you Norm

So if you cover it with guide epoxy the weather resistant and durability aspects are a moot point, correct? I have used polyester embroidery thread for years for ribbing on nymphs and wet flies and have never had a problem with it. I will admit tho I hang a lot of them in trees and bushes so maybe if I used them longer ???? Who knows

Any reason you couldn't use metallic polyester thread instead of nylon thread for a 3 or 4 turn trim band?

36. Re: India ink
Herb: why do you say not to use India ink? I have a rod built 5 years ago and my daughter "signed" it for me and I can see no detrimental effects. I did cover that that with a light coat of guide epoxy but I was wondering if that was even necessary

37. India ink
If you use India ink to add a signature to a graphite rod blank do you have to give it a light coat of guide wrap or is it waterproof?

I had never heard of them either until a friend of mine built a rod with a Bloke blank, I used it for a short while and was favorably impressed.
I was just curious if any on this forum had actually used them.

Has anyone built a fly rod on a Bloke blank (A UK company) if so any observations, good, bad, or indifferent?

40. Re: Underwrap
I was being somewhat facetious in my remark about being laughed at. In over 50 years of trout fishing the only time anyone has laughed at me is when I have taken one of my spectacular falls, which I am famous for. AND the ones laughing are my fishing buddies

Thank you very much for your prompt and succinct replies. It would seem it is unanimous I will not be laughed off the trout stream for not using an underwrap. I suspected this is what I would hear but it is nice to have it confirmed by people more knowledgable than I am. Thanks again

42. Underwrap
Perhaps this subject has been dissected ad infinitum but..... please humor me. I have built fly rods but not in a few years and I would classify my ability as mediocre at best. I am building a 3 wt 10 ft nymph rod as a Covid stay at home project, I have a neighbor who has been building rods for 50 years and is very, very good, he helps me whenever I need it, which is often. He is an advocate o

I have built a few fly rods and consider myself somewhere between a novice and mediocre rod builder, BUT, I have a yen for a 10 ft, 4 wt to be used for nymphing. Do I need it? NO. Do I want it? Yes, and I need a winter project. I have been looking at a Pac Bay Quickline blank, it is reasonably priced and the online reviews seem positive, no one would lie on the internet would they? Anyone her

I am looking for advice/input from people who have built and used fly rods using the MHX blanks. Do you also have first hand experience with the "higher end blanks" Sage, St Croix, Winston etc. If so how do they compare? Thank you

45. Adding epoxy
About five years ago I built my first and only fly rod, apparently I
did a poor job on the finishing epoxy. The finish now has small
blemishes and gray spots, can I simply add another light coat to
the existing epoxy, I have no desire to completely remove the guides
and start from scratch. The rod works very well and I am happy with
how it casts, but if I could refresh it cosmetically I

I am taking off old epoxy and wraps and replacing guides on a graphite fly rod. Once all the epoxy is gone I am planning on sanding the area with 1000 grit sandpaper, is this a good plan and if so how energetic can you be with your sanding?

I have the same question excpt it pertains to fly rod blanks, most all discussed in this thread are for spin or casting. I have owned or own some "high end " fly rods and while, they are very nice I wonder if you can duplicate this with a blank that isnt from Sage, Loomis, St Croix, Winston, etc, etc. Any opinions?

51. Removing epixy
I am going to finally get around to replacing a guide on a fly rod that unfortunately got damaged as I rolled down a river last fall. I have watched countless videos and read articles concerning this job and I am still somewhat confused as to how you get the epoxy off safely. Can you safely use low heat from a hair dryer on graphite? Can you sand the affected area (1000 grit) without harming

Well I just pulled the trigger on a "second" so I will see what I get. If its even close to being as advertised then I am money ahead, if its not I am out about the cost of a cheap meal and a glass of house wine. The risk vs reward thingy seems favorable. By the way I am not a professional rod builder out to fleece some unsuspecting customer, I am so inexperienced I couldnt even be c

Your probably right but Im buying oil stock too so we shall see. There is always a price point at which something becomes attractive, the trick is figuring out what that price point is.

Thanks Mike, I think for the small amount CP costs I will just buy a new bottle and not take a chance. In the overall cost CP is negligible.

Several years ago I built a fly rod (casts beautifully but cosmetically it is easy to tell it is a first rod) Anyway I am going to try it again and looking thru my old material I found a bottle of color preservative that I never opened, would it still be good? Probably 10 years old

59. Re: Flex Coat
Thank you, I am a go slow tpe of guy so Im sure I will make a couple batches before Im done. You have been very patient and generous with advice so I am going to risk asking one more question before I get tuned out, besides Im sitting in the Atlanta airport waiting for a connection so I have no where to go. My question is about guides not flex coat so Im not sure if I have to start a new thread
