I just received a spool of nylon silke thread and tied up a test piece and the epoxy separated immediately. There is either wax or some other contaminant . Called the seller and claimed they don't have a problem. Any suggestions

I am considering using English twist snake guides on a 9' 8wt graphite fast action rod(st Croix). I know the English twist is opposite the American twist and the English twist guides are not quite as high off the blank as the American guides. Is there any significant effects as far as casting is concerned Possibly were the English twist guides developed for there type of fishing or no signific

Other than the wire boat guides how come there appears to be no guide maker that makes a size 14 stripper guide. There are times when I want to use a smaller than called for guide.

I was laying out the guide spacing according to a chart from the internet, actually several just to see what the differences were between them and most of them were close to the same distances. I have 3 9' blanks, a 4 6 and 8 wgt. There some minor differences but each blank had at least one guide that was close to a joint. My question is, are there any potential problems putting a guide at ea

I know many fly rodders have used them and some like them and some don't. What are the advantages or disadvantages of furled leaders or is it that some like them and others don't.

I understand all the reasons for no extra tips and taking an extra rod or two just in case. I guess it's a little more difficult to get one than just to include one as an option to the builder. I would pay the extra money but that is just me.

Adds clarity and I guessed at what said so I'm not confused. I just thought by emphasis on "the yorker caps" that there had to be higher reason for them. Thanks for filling in the blanks

What is the significance of the yorker cap? Measurement? I'm a bit mystified.

I acquired an sc IV 4 ft 9' 8wt. I don't think st Croix makes this blank and my question is what is the action of this rod and any other pertinent information about the rod. I'm hoping for a fast action rod. Thanks once again.

The brand was American tackle matrix fly rod . It broke just below the first guide. I put another tip and the rod still casts well. In fact I will continue to fish the rod just the way it is. I sure would like to see the process to restoring the rod back to the way state you described. I've been building for a couple of years and never thought that method of repair.

It's not the reason I have avoided fast action rods. I mentioned something about timing and the flaws and they agreed with me so I came away with the belief that fast action was to be avoided. To honest I have some problem fishing clouser minnows especially on the back end of the cast because the is kinda jarring...not at all smooth. I keep fishing them and the cast 25 or so feet but that's it

Thanks for the insight Tom. Some one once said to me that fast actions would point out where the flaws are in your casting. Never mind fast action with soft tips. I won't shy away from fast actions.

Are there any competitions and I'm pretty sure there are where amateur/hobbiest can submit rods for judging and gage where they may be in the world of rod building.

All of the rods I've built so far have moderates. I haven't built a fast action rod so far partly because of the fact that I've read and told that they are a bit more difficult to cast. Any flaws in technique will show up and a certain amount of frustration will show up as a result.

I hope I didn't come off as being unfriendly but I just couldn't get my head around what was being said. After reading your explanation I snapped the tip on a rod and replaced the tip top and the rod cast just fine all be it slightly stiffer. I do appreciate the responses thank you ????

Michael, could you explain the tip of a slightly larger one than the original. I'm curious as to what sort of tip that would be and I don't really know how to figure out who and where I would get such a tip. I'm just curious ???? about how you would go about it. A number of posts have said just contact the rod maker but I did that with the rod that I broke and they there were none available.

I've been building fly rods now for a couple of years and have wanted to include an extra tip with every rod and it's very difficult to impossible to get one. Roger offers extra tips on some of his blanks. On @#$%& nearly every blank maker offers no extra tips. In my head I can imagine racks of blanks for the different lengths of rods and wgts and bagging each rod with an extra tip. At least

A couple of times now I have cooked the tip of the blank a little too much and the tip came off. What is the best procedure to avoid this. I'm currently using gorilla jell glue.

Silk thread doesn't have color preserver and will darken by several shades. Will color preserver do the same thing as applying epoxy to the thread? Silk is strong and there seems to be lots of it on @#$%&. UV protection is important when coating the threads.

You got it right Ken. I've tried to do it as described on you tube and some where some how a thread gets crossed up across all of the threads. I'll try your tooth pick method. I'll let you know ????

I am trying to wrap thread using a straw over top guide thread and it seems as though I can't get away from one of the threads crossing over all of the threads which to my eye looks not so good. Anyone else encounter this situation?

I am currently building a blank from china and the labeling says the blank is 10 lbs. How does that translate to fly wgt. Is there a chart or formula for that conversion.

I contacted the seller and he said he will make it right. My only question was if anyone one had experience with tl Johnson blanks. I planned to talk to the seller before the moderator showed me the error of my ways but I was only asking if they had any experiences with the seller. Straightened me out!!!

I have 7'9" TL Johnson 6wt bug poppin fly rod and broke 6" of the tip. Anyone else had this happen with this particular product. I would very much like to get a replacement tip from them. I don't want to have to purchase a blank as sold on @#$%& to make a new tip! The tip broke while casting.
