I'll take a piece of white thread and tape it to a ruler then use a fine tipped pen to mark it out on the thread. Let it dry good then tape it down on the ends over top of your under wrap. Do a few wraps over it then very carefully cut the white thread in a few places and pull it out.

Hello. I'm a rookie compared to most when it comes to rod building and I was in the same boat as you not to long ago. I didn't want to spend a lot of money untill I knew what I wanted. For applying finish i simply put a corded drill in my bench vise and use a velcro strap to get the desired speed. I use a remote controll outlet converter to start and stop for touching up and it spins easily by
